Hannah was completely overwhelmed. Her emotions swelled and crashed, shutting out anything Hogan tried to say. All she wanted was to escape—to get as far away from this place, from all of it, as possible.
She’d never told anyone about her past. Not a soul. For her, those memories were scars that would never fade, and the idea of someone else knowing—especially someone she cared about—felt unbearable. She’d always planned to swallow those memories, to lock them inside forever. But fate had other ideas. Now the truth was out, spoken aloud, and worst of all, the person who knew was the man she loved most.
“Hannah, please, just calm down for a second, okay?” Hogan’s voice was gentle, pleading. “I know everything now, but these aren’t reasons for us to break up. We don’t have to let this come between us.”
He looked at her, utterly confused. He couldn’t understand what she was thinking or why she was suddenly pushing him away. When she said the word—when she said “break up”—it hit him like a punch to the gut. For a moment, he just stared, frozen, feeling his world collapse. He realized then that he couldn’t lose her. She’d become the center of his world.
“The moment you started digging into my past, we were doomed,” Hannah said quietly, voice trembling. “Let’s just end this here. I’m leaving.”
Tears streamed down her cheeks. Her heart ached unbearably. She’d never imagined that the man she loved would one day investigate her life, that she’d be so exposed, so stripped of every shred of privacy in front of him.
“Hannah, can’t we talk? Please, don’t just walk away,” Hogan pleaded, desperate for her to stay, to sit and at least give him a chance to explain.
“There’s nothing left to say. You already know everything about my past. What else is there?” Her words were firm, final. There was no room for negotiation, no possibility of compromise.
“Hannah…”
Hogan’s voice was hoarse, helpless. He had no idea what to do—how to fix what was broken, how to even define what they were to each other anymore.
“Broke up?” Marguerite repeated, stunned. She hadn’t expected this at all, and her mind raced with questions about what could have happened.
Hogan told her everything, recounting the events in detail, his voice weary and defeated.
“I never thought Hannah would react like this after learning that I knew about her past,” he said quietly. “I certainly didn’t expect her to break up with me. She just… she can’t seem to let go of what happened, no matter what I say.”
“But I explained it all to her. I told her it doesn’t matter to me. I’d never leave her because of what she’s been through. But she’s the one pushing me away.”
He shook his head, lost. He couldn’t understand how she could be so resolute, so determined to end things. He didn’t know what to do, or how to stop loving her.
