It was clear now that Laura didn’t need her help at all.
“Thank you so much, Ms. Taylor. I feel terrible for being away from the office for so long, leaving you to manage everything alone. I want to come back, I really do, but every time I see him lying in that hospital bed, I can’t bring myself to leave.”
Laura’s voice was thick with guilt.
“Don’t give it a second thought. I’ve got it covered. You held down the fort for me, now it’s my turn. My family situation has settled down, so just stay at the hospital and take care of your patient.” Marguerite paused, a smile in her voice. “But just so we’re clear, even if you two get together, you’re coming right back to work for me. Don’t even think about jumping ship to his company. I’m not about to lose my right-hand woman!”
Marguerite couldn’t help but tease her, making it clear that nothing would change their professional relationship.
“Of course not! I would never leave you. We’ve worked together for so long, and you’ve been so good to me. You’re like an older sister. Nothing and no one could ever pull us apart!”
Laura still felt a pang of guilt. Marguerite was her boss, yet she’d been nothing but understanding, even helping to orchestrate this whole situation.
“Don’t be silly. When you get back, we’ll tackle that new project together. I’ll have all the proposals ready by then. And we need to start hiring. The two of us can’t handle everything anymore. Our company is growing, and I know it’s only going to get better.”
