Sometimes, the despair was overwhelming. It felt as if there was nothing left to live for. She had made her arrangements and had complete faith that Leonard could handle his uncles after she was gone.
“Grandmother, if you agree to go, I promise I will make the company stronger than ever,” Leonard pleaded, his voice thick with emotion. “I will never let it fall into anyone else’s hands. I know you can get better. Please, just one more time. Come to the hospital with me. If there’s still no hope after this, I swear I will never make you go again.”
He refused to give up. He couldn't bear to see her suffer at home when there was still a chance, however slim. Even if surgery was out of the question, the hospital could stabilize her condition and ease her pain. He understood that her despair came from a feeling of hopelessness, a sense that she had no reason left to live. He had to reignite that spark, that will to survive. She was a fighter. If she wanted to live, she would.
Finally, under his relentless pressure, Mrs. Murphy let out a long, weary sigh. “I know you mean well, Leonard. But look at me. What good will another trip to the hospital do?” She paused, seeing the desperation in his eyes. “Fine. You’ve made your point. I’ll go. But this is the last time. If my condition doesn’t improve, I will not accept any more treatment. The hospital is a nightmare for me, and I refuse to spend my final days suffering there.”
Even if she survived, what kind of life would it be? A life of constant pain. She was ready to let go.
Aaron went with them to the hospital, though his father had mysteriously vanished along the way. It didn't matter. The priority was getting Mrs. Murphy treated.
“Doctor, my grandmother’s heart was put under severe stress again,” Leonard said urgently to her regular physician. “She’s in a lot of pain. Please, you have to see her.”
Leonard trusted this doctor, who had managed his grandmother’s condition for years. If anyone could help her, it was him.
