“Mr. Murphy, I’ve told you before, her heart is in a very delicate state,” the doctor said, his expression grim. “She must avoid any kind of agitation. Did something happen today to upset her?”
The doctor sighed, exasperated. The Murphys were a wealthy, powerful family. Why couldn't they manage to keep their matriarch calm?
“I’ll explain later, Doctor. Right now, please, just help her get better. I can’t stand to see her in so much pain. Just stabilize her condition, that’s all I ask.” Leonard’s voice was a raw plea.
“I’ll do my best to minimize her suffering,” the doctor replied, his tone serious. “But I have to be frank with you. Her condition is critical. I can’t guarantee she will make it through this.”
The doctor’s face was grave. Mrs. Murphy’s heart problem was a chronic, worsening issue. He and his team had been fighting it for years, and he’d grown fond of his stubborn, resilient patient.
“I understand. I trust you,” Leonard said, his voice barely a whisper.
A short while later, the doctor emerged, his face somber. “We’ve administered the strongest medication we have, which should help stabilize her heart for now,” he explained. “But her condition is extremely precarious. She is in constant danger.”
He was a friend as much as a physician and felt Leonard deserved the unvarnished truth. They needed to be prepared for the worst. This wasn’t an exaggeration; if he hadn’t known her case so intimately, she might not have survived the initial attack. Her hospital visits were becoming more frequent, each one more dangerous than the last. He knew the root of the problem wasn’t just medical—it was her family.
