“No need to explain,” Mr. Green cut in, his face etched with impatience, clearly uninterested in hearing another word.
He paused, then his expression shifted to one of polite warmth. “Ms. Taylor, I’m very interested in your patent. If the opportunity arises, I’d like to collaborate with you on developing it. Here’s my card. If you’re willing, feel free to reach out anytime.”
Marguerite accepted the card with a poised smile. “Thank you, Mr. Green. I appreciate your interest—I’ll give it serious thought.”
Mr. Green rose and left the room.
Benjamin hurried after him, but it was obvious Mr. Green’s mind was made up. He could only stand there and watch as Mr. Green and his team stepped into the elevator. His face went ashen, and in frustration, he stomped hard on the polished floor.
“Happy now, Marguerite?” Benjamin’s glare was filled with hate; bitterness twisted his features and he seemed barely in control.
Happy?
Marguerite’s lips curled into a cool smile. “This is just the beginning.”
She didn’t waste another word. Turning on her heel, she walked out.
Laura rushed after her, the two of them leaving the office together.
“Are you alright?” Marguerite asked, her voice gentle with concern.
“I’m fine, Ms. Taylor. You were amazing back there—my absolute hero,” Laura replied, eyes shining with admiration.
Benjamin really was strong, she thought to herself. It had taken a while before she managed to get back up after being shoved to the ground. But remembering the look on his face when things didn’t go his way, any lingering pain seemed to vanish.
Marguerite just smiled, saying nothing. Denying Benjamin the satisfaction of victory brought her little joy—certainly not as much as she’d imagined.
Once they’d left the building, Marguerite headed straight for the Murphy Corporation’s hotel. She still had work to finish, so she brought Laura along to help.
No sooner had Marguerite stepped into her suite than a firm knock sounded at the door.
Laura went to answer it.
