Marguerite didn’t want to trouble him over something so trivial. Besides, she already had her plan in place and was confident she could handle it on her own.
“I know you have your own ideas, but if you run into anything tricky, don’t try to tough it out alone.”
Leonard’s words came through the phone—cool as ever, yet with an undercurrent of gentleness that caught her off guard.
For a moment, Marguerite wondered if she’d misheard. Was there really a trace of concern in his voice?
She nodded, even if he couldn’t see her. “Alright. Thank you.”
After a few more brief instructions, Leonard hung up.
The unexpected show of care left Marguerite a little unsettled, despite the fact that Leonard was her fiancé.
But right now, she was actually quite hungry. Whatever else could wait—first, she needed to eat.
“Ms. Taylor, this steak is incredible! Honestly, I think it’s the best I’ve ever had.”
“Your fiancé clearly puts a lot of thought into things for you,” Laura teased.
Leonard seemed to have eyes everywhere. He somehow always knew what she was up to, even that Laura had come back with her for dinner, so there were two generous servings at the table.
Was that really the case?
Marguerite found it hard to believe. Lately, she’d grown wary of men—experience had taught her not to give her heart away so easily anymore.

The next morning, bright and early, Marguerite and Laura arrived at the office. There were a few final things to wrap up.
“Marguerite, how dare you make my son lose such a major contract! You’re becoming more and more outrageous by the day!” Mrs. Foster shrieked, her voice echoing down the hall. “My son treated you so well, and I took you in like my own daughter. Even if you two couldn’t get married, how could you use such underhanded tricks to hurt him? You’re absolutely shameless!”
Her accusations rang sharp and loud, drawing curious stares as people gathered to watch the drama unfold.
Marguerite’s eyes flashed cold. “I’ve always respected you because you’re older, not because you have the right to storm into my company and spout nonsense. If you keep this up, I’ll call security and have you escorted out.”
The crowd kept growing, whispering to one another. Laura shot them a fierce glare. “Do you all have nothing better to do? Get back to work!” she barked. “You’re being paid to do your jobs, not to stand around gawking at your boss’s business!”
That was enough to send everyone scattering. Their paychecks mattered more than a bit of morning gossip.
Mrs. Foster let out a cold, disdainful laugh, hands on her hips. “What, feeling embarrassed now? If you had any sense of shame, you’d be apologizing to me right now!”
She sneered, her voice laced with venom. “Marguerite, I never thought a seductress like you could be so crafty—playing our whole family for fools and leaving my son pining for you day and night!”
