She hesitated for a moment.
As Marguerite wrestled with her thoughts, the front door swung open.
It was Leonard’s mother.
“Wilma, come help me with these!”
Arms laden with bags and boxes, Mrs. Murphy bustled through the doorway. At once, Wilma hurried over to assist her.
Marguerite followed, moving to help unload the mountain of shopping bags.
From the stack of elegant gift bags, Mrs. Murphy selected the smallest one and opened it.
Inside was a delicate pearl necklace.
“Marguerite, I didn’t know you were here yesterday, so I hadn’t prepared anything. Today, I went out and picked this just for you. I thought it would suit you perfectly—as a little welcome gift. Here, let me put it on for you.”
It was clear how much Mrs. Murphy valued her; after all, she’d chosen something herself instead of just sending a gift.
Marguerite had never cared much for these things, nor had she expected them.
“Thank you,” she said sincerely.
She leaned forward so Mrs. Murphy could fasten the necklace around her neck.
Mrs. Murphy stepped back, surveying her handiwork, and nodded with satisfaction. “Wonderful. It looks beautiful on you. You should wear it from now on!”
Then she pulled out two more bags. “I picked out a few outfits for you as well. Honestly, I’ve always wanted a daughter to go shopping with me. Leonard is such a bore about these things.”
“So, when I saw some lovely clothes today, I just had to get them for you.”
Only then did Marguerite realize these gifts were all for her.
