“Edith, stop making a scene. This is Leonard’s girlfriend’s first visit to our home—do you really have to bring this up right now?”
“This house isn’t a revolving door for you. Come home if you want, but don’t expect anyone to welcome you with open arms.”
Mrs. Murphy was furious, her hands trembling as she spoke, and she showed Edith no courtesy whatsoever.
Edith had never gotten along with the Murphy family. Whenever she was around, arguments inevitably broke out.
At the heart of every dispute was the question of Mrs. Murphy’s inheritance.
Leonard was the one Mrs. Murphy trusted most—the one she believed could be relied upon. The entire Murphy estate needed to be passed on to someone worthy, someone she could trust without reservation.
So naturally, Leonard was her first choice.
Though the matter hadn’t been made official yet, it was all but decided. Edith and her underachieving son, however, couldn’t accept it. After all, they were the eldest branch of the family—the firstborn son and grandson. Losing out to Leonard was a bitter pill to swallow.
From then on, their relationship with the rest of the family had been strained. They had never truly accepted Leonard as one of their own.
“Mother, how can you play favorites so blatantly? And I didn’t come here to stir up trouble—it’s just that you’ve always treated our side of the family like outsiders.”
She glared at Mrs. Murphy, her frustration barely contained. “Your precious grandson brings home a girlfriend like this, and with your health so fragile lately, you haven’t even been out of the house. But do you have any idea what people are saying about them out there?”
“All the gossip and rumors are damaging our family’s reputation. How can the Murphy family tolerate a woman like her?”
