“That’s enough!”
Leonard, who had been silent until now, suddenly spoke, his sharp gaze landing squarely on Edith.
“From this moment on, the company will no longer cover any of your son’s expenses. Tell him yourself—he can’t say I didn’t warn you.”
He straightened, his tone icy. “I’m the one running the company now. Every project, every decision, that’s on me. No one from your family has any say here anymore, so don’t blame me for being blunt.”
Without waiting for a reply, Leonard took Marguerite’s hand.
“Grandmother,” he said gently, “Marguerite’s had a long day on the road. She’s exhausted—I'm going to take her home to get some rest. We’ll come visit you another day.”
With that, Leonard led Marguerite away, his expression stormy and unyielding.
Marguerite offered a polite farewell. “Goodbye, Grandmother. Please take care of yourself, and don’t let any of this upset you.”
She knew that, even though she and Leonard were about to get engaged, she was still considered something of an outsider in this family. It wasn’t her place to say more about their private affairs.
Getting out quickly was definitely the best choice—lingering would only make things more awkward.
Once they left, they headed straight to another house.
Judging by the matching decor, this must have been Leonard’s home as well.
“It’s late,” Leonard said softly, trying to soothe her nerves. “Spend the night here. Tomorrow, I’ll take you home.”
Marguerite nodded, ever understanding. “Alright.”
Was Leonard still awake?
She pushed the door open quietly and found him still at his desk, working, well past midnight.
Was he really pulling an all-nighter just because he’d spent the day with her and was now making up for lost time?
A pang of guilt hit her. Had she been a burden to him?
Leonard looked up, his chiseled features softened by fatigue. “Why are you up?”
“I was just thirsty,” Marguerite said, shifting awkwardly. “But you’re still working? Is it because you spent the day with me and now you’re behind? Honestly, you don’t have to stay here on my account. If you need to get back to work tomorrow, I’ll be fine.”
