The last incident had weighed heavily on the old lady’s mind. She’d been longing to find the right moment to explain herself, to apologize properly.
After all, Marguerite had been wronged in their home, and now that she was part of the family, the old lady couldn’t bear the thought of her suffering any further.
“Grandma, I’ve nearly forgotten about what happened,” Marguerite said, offering a gentle smile. “Honestly, it never really bothered me. You don’t need to apologize—if you keep this up, I’ll start feeling embarrassed!”
“I know Edith probably wasn’t actually targeting me,” she continued. “Maybe it was all a misunderstanding, and I don’t take it to heart. I’ll be more prepared next time, and I won’t let it get to me.”
“You’re getting on in years, Grandma, and the last thing I want is for you to worry yourself sick because of me. If something like this ever happens again, I trust Leonard will step in and handle it.”
Marguerite wanted to set the record straight, hoping the old woman wouldn’t keep dwelling on it.
Luckily, she finally had the chance.
“Marguerite, I really do adore you,” Grandma said warmly, reaching for her hand. “From the very first day you came into our lives, I knew you were kind and understanding. Even if you say you’re fine, I know you shouldn’t have to put up with such things.”
“That’s just how our family is, you’ll see as time goes on.”
She spoke with a helpless sigh, searching for the right words.
Marguerite understood. With their family’s background, these sorts of things were almost inevitable.
Thankfully, she’d grown up in a simple household, just her parents and Hogan—no tangled grudges or complicated histories.
After chatting with Grandma for a while, Marguerite felt the old lady’s spirits lift. Leonard sat beside them, joining in the conversation, adding his own gentle reassurances.
They were just laughing over a story when the front door swung open.
