She realized they weren’t on the ground floor. This was some other level, and at this hour, the entire building was empty save for the security guard at the front desk. The floor was pitch-black, so dark she couldn’t even see the expression on Jareth’s face. The more she thought about it, the more terrified she became.
For the past few days, she’d had a gnawing feeling that he wasn’t going to let her off so easily. It seemed he was finally about to show his true colors.
“Jareth, let me go! Do you hear me?” Niamh yelled, kicking her legs and flailing her arms.
“I feel obligated to remind you, Ms. Lynn, that this floor is empty. No people, and no cameras.”
At his words, Niamh froze.
“What do I have to do for you to let me go, Jareth?” she asked, her voice seething as she used his first name.
“Go see my grandfather with me, as my girlfriend. Do that, and I’ll let you go,” he answered. “Otherwise…”
“Fine!” Niamh cut him off before he could finish the threat. Seeing the position she was in, she knew if she didn’t agree, she wouldn’t be escaping his clutches tonight.
“Jareth, I hate you. I hate you more than words can say. You’re even worse than that man from five years ago. No, you’re both just as despicable.” In her mind, she was shouting at Jareth.
Hearing her finally agree, Jareth let out a breath he didn’t realize he’d been holding.
“Stubborn woman,” he thought. “So she preferred to do things the hard way.”
Jareth’s grip on her waist slowly loosened. Niamh saw her chance and tried to scramble free, but his arm snaked around her again, pulling her back onto his lap.
He leaned in, his voice a low murmur. “Ms. Lynn, if you’re going to play my girlfriend, you need to make it convincing.”
“What do you want me to do?” she asked, her body tense. She tried several times to stand, but his arms were like steel bands around her waist. She was powerless. She also worried that struggling too much would only provoke him into doing something even worse. For now, she had no choice but to be a lamb to the slaughter.
Without a moment’s hesitation, Niamh tried to back out. “I’m sorry, Mr. Bragg, I can’t do this job. Why don’t you just ask your girlfriend instead?”
The comment caught Jareth off guard, and for a second, he couldn’t remember who she was talking about.
“Which girlfriend?” he asked, genuinely confused.
Oh, for heaven’s sake. He has so many he can’t even keep track. If that was the case, why was he so fixated on her? Did she just look like an easy target?
“The one with the last name Warden,” Niamh replied with a disgusted look on her face.
The woman named Warden? He didn’t think he had ever mentioned Yara Warden to her. How did she remember the name so clearly? Niamh was obviously jealous.
