Jareth suddenly grabbed her chin, tilting her face up to his. “Are you jealous, Ms. Lynn?” he purred mockingly.
Within her, Niamh was screaming, “Jealous? I’d be jealous of a rock before I was jealous over you. I can’t stand the sight of you, what is there to be jealous of?”
Niamh ignored the question completely. “Mr. Bragg, it’s already eleven o’clock,” she reminded him, her voice laced with venom. “If I don’t get home soon, my four little treasures are going to come looking for me.”
She had a feeling Jove and Keir had been acting strangely the last couple of days, watching her both secretly and openly. Just last night, they had asked to come to the office with her, saying they wanted to thank Jareth in person for the phones he’d given them. Keir was far too clever for his own good; if he saw how Jareth was constantly picking on her, it would only lead to trouble. So, she’d told him no.
“BOOM!”
As the thought crossed her mind, a massive explosion rocked the building, making her jump. Jareth heard it too. It sounded like a bomb.
“Mr. Bragg, did you hear that?” Niamh asked, her voice trembling.
“I heard it.”
Jareth finally let her go, pulling out his phone just as it started to ring. The caller ID showed the front desk. He answered immediately.
“Mr. Bragg,” the head of security reported, his voice frantic, “someone just blew up your office!”
What? Someone blew up his office? Who would have the gall to do something so blatant? Even his uncles wouldn’t dare to oppose him so openly.
“Who was it?” Jareth demanded, his voice dangerously low.
“It was… it was four little kids!”
“What? Four kids?” Jareth shouted, unable to believe what he was hearing.
“Niamh, what do I do?” Cassian’s panicked voice came through the line. “I woke up from a nap and the children are gone! Where could they have gone this late at night?”
Niamh’s world froze. It was them. Her quadruplets had blown up the president’s office.
“Dad, I know where they are. Don’t worry,” she said, trying to keep her voice steady. “You should get some sleep.”
She hung up before he could ask any more questions.
Jareth turned his head, his cold, furious gaze locking onto hers. The look in his eyes demanded an explanation.
“Mr. Bragg, let’s just go up and see what happened first,” Niamh stammered, clinging to a sliver of hope. Maybe it wasn’t them?
