Niamh’s face went pale. The bracelet was clearly priceless; she couldn't possibly accept it.
Just as she was about to refuse, Jareth snatched it from his grandfather’s hand and, without a word, fastened it around her wrist.
Niamh glanced at him but decided to let it go. She wouldn't argue in front of his grandfather. She could always take it off later and return it to him on the way home.
Harlan looked at his grandson, gathering his courage. "Jareth, you're not getting any younger. Since you've found a wonderful girl, why don't you two get married soon? If you get married, I'll hand over the chairman's position to you right now."
Jareth exploded. "Harlan, don't think you can bribe me with your damn chairman title and expect me to forgive you. I don't give a damn about it!"
Niamh held her breath, terrified. What could have happened between them to cause such animosity? She never should have agreed to come here. What was she thinking?
"Ms. Lynn, we're leaving," Jareth commanded.
"Jareth, it's my birthday," Harlan pleaded, grabbing his grandson's hand. "I'm begging you, don't go. Stay and have a meal with me. Please?"
Jareth violently shook him off.
"Ms. Lynn, what are you waiting for? Let's go!" he barked at Niamh.
She quickly stood and pushed his wheelchair toward the door.
Harlan stood alone in the center of the vast living room, watching them leave with a look of anguish.
"Sir, it's been over five years. Has he still not forgiven you?" Lenny, the butler, asked softly as he approached.
"I'm afraid he never will," Harlan murmured. "Lenny... did I really do the wrong thing?"
"Mr. Bragg, you have nothing to apologize to me for," she replied. "The person you should be apologizing to is your grandfather."
"What do you know?" he snapped back. "If you don't know anything, then keep your mouth shut!"
Niamh mentally kicked herself. “Serves you right for being nosy.”
Jareth drained two more glasses. As he reached for the bottle again, Niamh couldn't take it anymore. She snatched the glass from his hand.
"Mr. Bragg, you can't have any more to drink!" she exclaimed.
Any more and he’d be completely wasted.
