“Not bad, kid. You know when to bend.”
Still, Jareth refused. “Sorry, I don’t need any friends.”
“But everyone needs friends,” Jove insisted. “How can you not need friends?”
Keir cut him off, yelling into the phone, “Jove, are you crazy? Why would you want to be friends with this guy? Don’t you remember how he bullies Mom?”
He redirected his anger at Jareth. “I’m warning you, if you ever bully my mom again, I’ll blow up your company!”
Blow up his company? This kid’s got some nerve.
“Keir, did you steal my phone again?” Suddenly, Niamh’s sharp voice echoed from the other room.
Hearing her, Keir’s expression immediately turned to one of panicked urgency. He pointed a finger at the phone again. “You’d better remember what I said. And you are not to tell my mom a single thing about our conversation. Or you’re dead meat.”
With that final threat, Keir hung up.
Jareth stared at the black screen, wondering what in the world he had just gotten himself into. Then, thinking of the two mischievous boys, a smile touched his lips.
“Keir, Jove, what are you two doing up so late? And why did you steal my phone?” Niamh demanded, phone in hand.
Jove glanced at Keir and lowered his head. When it came to telling barefaced lies, that was Keir's department. Jove just wasn't good at it.
“Mom, we couldn’t sleep,” Keir said smoothly. “We just wanted to borrow your phone to play a few games.”
