She would enter both the ready-to-wear and the children’s apparel categories. And she was determined to win first place in both.
If she could pull it off, she wouldn’t just achieve her dream of becoming a designer; she would also win a massive prize of two hundred thousand dollars.
With that money, she could finally pay off her debts, and the rest could go toward extracurricular classes for the kids.
It pained her that their interests had to be nurtured at home because she couldn't afford proper lessons. A familiar pang of guilt struck her.
She had brought them into this world without being able to provide for them properly. They had no father, and on top of that, they had to share in her struggles. The more she thought about it, the deeper her guilt became.
Niamh didn't get to bed until midnight.
...
The next morning, she had barely stepped through the company's main entrance when the HR manager intercepted her.
Mr. Bragg and Mr. Hume were bringing important German clients to the office at eight-thirty, and she needed to get the conference room ready immediately.
The manager stressed that the room had to be spotless. This German delegation was bringing a potential fifty-million-dollar contract with them. Mr. Bragg had promised that if they landed the deal, he’d treat the entire office to a night of dinner and drinks.
Niamh wasn’t interested in a party. She wondered if, should the deal go through, she could ask for the cash equivalent of her share of the celebration to put toward her debt. Every little bit helped.
She was truly desperate for money. The phone and internet bills were due soon, followed by water, electricity, and gas. All those miscellaneous expenses added up to several hundred dollars a month. If Cassian hadn't given her that two thousand dollars, she would have been down to her last twenty. She was already planning to ask Winnie if she could get paid for the first ten days of her housekeeping job in advance. That would be enough to keep them afloat for another month.
