Rhoslyn fumbled in her pockets but came up empty.
“Fine, I’ll go with you. I’ll pay,” Rhoslyn said, tossing the mop aside and grabbing Niamh’s wrist. She started to drag her away.
They had to go, now.
But Niamh yanked her arm back. “If you’re going, then I don’t need to. I have a lot of work to finish.”
Besides, running errands wasn’t part of her job description. The company had a purchasing department for a reason.
“Niamh, are you deliberately trying to defy me?” Rhoslyn hissed.
“It seems to me that you’re the one trying to mess with me,” Niamh retorted.
“You—!” Rhoslyn was about to explode.
Just then, Usher walked by. “Usher, do you have any cash? Lend me two hundred dollars,” she demanded.
Usher did have cash, but he was hesitant to lend it. Rhoslyn had a reputation around the office for borrowing money and never paying it back.
“What do you need it for?” he asked, feeling he should at least inquire.
“Just give it to me if you have it. Don’t ask so many questions,” Rhoslyn snapped impatiently.
After a moment’s thought, Usher pulled out his wallet and handed her two hundred-dollar bills. The woman was vicious; it wasn’t worth making an enemy of her over two hundred bucks.
Rhoslyn snatched the money and was about to turn back to Niamh when she saw the manager, Carmen, heading their way.
Niamh felt a knot of nervousness in her stomach; she had never been in a situation like this before. The seat was next to Cormac. As she sat down, he gave her shoulder a light pat.
“Don’t be nervous, Niamh,” he whispered. “Just do what you did earlier. You’ll be great.”
She glanced at him and nodded, feeling some of her tension melt away.
It was just like when they were kids. Whenever she was nervous before a school event, Cormac had always been there to encourage her, just like this. His simple gesture was a comfort.
Standing in the doorway, Rhoslyn watched the exchange, her face turning a sickly shade of green.
Usher walked up behind her and tapped her on the shoulder. “Ms. Lynn, shouldn’t you be giving me my two hundred dollars back?”
