Jareth leaned over her, bracing his long arms on the back of the sofa. He studied her face intently, his voice a low warning. “Niamh, the fashion show is at eight tonight. You’d better not ruin that dress or the makeup on your face.”

Niamh did a quick mental calculation. It was just after one o’clock, which meant she had more than six hours to kill. Ruining the dress seemed unlikely, but the makeup? How could she guarantee that? What if she dozed off and her false eyelashes fell off, or her lipstick smudged?

She didn’t dare voice her thoughts.

“I understand,” she said, though she felt a knot of anxiety tighten in her stomach. Being scrutinized by him like this was making her extremely flustered.

Oh my god, his gaze is drifting downward. She thought, “Jareth, aren’t you supposed to be immune to women? Where are you looking? I swear I’ll gouge your eyes out.”

Jareth had only intended to give her a quick warning, but for some reason, he found himself unable to move away. It was as if she possessed some magnetic force that was pulling him in, stirring a primal desire deep within him.

Sensing the dangerous shift in his gaze, Niamh panicked. She pushed against his chest, trying to scramble to her feet, but she moved too quickly. Her forehead slammed into his chin, and she cried out in pain.

“Ow, that hurts!”

Jareth felt a sharp jolt in his jaw and knew her head must have hurt even more. He opened his mouth to ask if she was okay, but what came out was, “Serves you right. Who told you to jump up like that?”

With that, he pulled back, straightened up, and strode toward the bedroom.

“Mr. Bragg, I’m hungry,” Niamh called out just as he reached the door, her voice small and meek.

Her words struck a chord deep inside him. An unexpected wave of warmth washed over him, and the darkness in his eyes instantly brightened.

He turned around, his gaze softening as he looked at her from across the room.
