I stood up to get the papers from my suitcase, but as I moved past him, he shot to his feet. An arm snaked around my waist, pulling me into his arms. I lost my footing and stumbled against him. My heart leaped into my throat, and I instinctively grabbed his shirt to steady myself. Then, I looked up and glared at him.
“Steven!”
He didn’t release me. He looked down, his handsome face dark with a rare, simmering rage. “You came on a business trip with me and brought divorce papers?”
“I was always going to divorce you,” I retorted. “You’re the one clinging to me. What’s wrong with bringing them?”
He let out a derisive laugh, his eyes filled with a deep, dark scorn. “Don’t forget, you still owe me three hundred thousand. You think you’re in any position to ask for a divorce?”
His contemptuous tone finally broke through my composure. I was so tired of this. Without today’s incident, I might have been able to tolerate it a little longer, to secretly gather evidence of his affair and go through the legal process. But now, after he had protected Verna, he was still clinging to me, using the money to hold me hostage. In my past life, he had at least had the decency to divorce me when he decided he wanted to be with Verna. Now, he was shamelessly trying to have it both ways.
I clenched my fists and glared up at him, a bitter smile on my lips. “Steven, you two-timing bastard. Today, you nearly hit me for another woman, and you think I can’t divorce you? Why should I have to put up with this?”
“Do you think you’re some kind of emperor with a wife and a concubine? Get over yourself.”
My words turned his face black with rage. I pounded on his chest, trying to break free. “Fine! If you’re so obsessed with that three hundred thousand, I’ll pay you back. The profit from this deal will be more than enough. I’ll help you close it, and we’ll call it even.”
As my mind wandered, I realized his kisses had moved from my lips to my neck. The tie of my robe had come undone, and his mouth was now on my collarbone.
A shiver ran through me. “Steven!”
He suddenly opened his eyes. They were bloodshot and wild. For a moment, he seemed dazed. So close, I could see my own reflection in his pupils—disheveled, lips swollen, looking utterly violated. Rage surged through me.
He seemed to snap back to reality. His brow furrowed, and he released my wrists. I immediately shoved him off me, stood up, and pulled my robe tight. Then, I slapped him across the face.
