Ira’s Pov
I walk into the tiny servant room to find two servants ripping open the gift boxes from the angel kings and stuffing the precious contents into their pockets.
“Why would they give her all this after they rejected her? She will never be fit to be queen and they said so themselves in front of a multitude of guests. A human commoner isn’t fit to be their servant even,” one says in a bitter tone.
“Yes, it’s confusing why they act like they care about her since their queen failed to control the dragons. Could it be a magic spell that she is using? The angel kings would not have killed Zilla executed if they were in there right minds,” the other replies in a worried voice.
“That might be the case. We must speak to the priest and hear what he says,” the third suggests and they all nod in agreement. Guess I am their enemy no matter what. The idiots think I would waste a magic spell on their wicked kings. If I knew any magic I would make myself invisible and get out of here. Why is it always the lies that spread faster than the truth?
I stride into the room and they all jump in alarm.
“Not… all these gifts were yours,” the one that suggested that I am a witch lies. “We are still preparing the room. I must ask that you leave and come back later,” she adds.
They exchanged the slim bed with a bigger one that takes almost the entire space. It has clean, silk sheets and feather pillows. A small open closet stands at the corner with only two long sleeved dresses inside. Finally I can breathe in deep without inhaling Queen Andria’s perfumes.
“You can take all gifts and leave the room as it is,” I say.
The servants glance at each other with astounded eyes. But they do not utter a word as each hastily collects a bunch of the gift boxes and walk out.
I walk to the window and stare outside. Lior’s tall figure saunters around the training grounds outside the palace, focus on supervising the training of knights. He smiles happily as he engages with them. Guess he really went back to his job and forgot about my existence.
“Ira,” I hear Linda’s voice from behind and turn.
She stands near the bed with several bottles of herbs and creams. “The angel kings has given me a job here as your doctor. They wish to ensure that you’re not in any kind of pain, she says in a nervous voice.
I want to strangle her to death. I probably should and have every right to take that revenge. It is because of her I am back here. I wonder if Lior is with her now.
I would need a silver dagger to kill her, which is currently unavailable in this room. I am however willing to wait for the right moment. Forgiveness has never been my virtue.
I turn away without saying a word to her. She is quiet for a long time and I start to think that she has grown a brain to realise that she is unwelcome here.
“I know coming back here isn’t what you wanted. But you were taking the man I love away with you. So I made the decision that would benefit us all. I have a chance to marry Lior and the Angel Kings will find your father and make you their queen,” she says.
The angel kings will find my father? They are now hunting him too? I must escape before they find him.
“Lola. Let me in before someone sees me,” the voice calls.
It is the soldier who used to sneak into the palace through the secret entrance. He must have come to spend the night with his servant girlfriend.
I hear a door open and close again. I guess she let him in since I cannot hear his voice anymore. It’s possible to hear through one of these thick walls, but not two. I must get closer to that servant’s room to eavesdrop on their conversation. Hopefully I will hear something that can help me escape this palace.
I slowly leave the bed and stride to the door barefoot. I manage to slide both the locks and the door open without making a sound. I scan the long corridor before stepping out. Every other room is quiet and dark, except one where I can see the golden light of a candle and also hear hushed voices, one thicker than the other.
It must be Lola’s room. She lit a candle to welcome her illegal guest. I only tiptoe close enough to hear their voices more clearer since it is possible for them to pick up my human scent.
“Oh lord! You stink like you haven’t bathed in years,” I hear the servant exclaim.
“No one has been cleaning the underground dungeons, and I had to hide there for hours while waiting for most guards to fall asleep,” the knight explains.
So the secret entrance is under the palace, close to the underground dungeon that I have never been to. Still it sounds like there is hope I might soon escape this place
