Sunlight trickled through the leaves, casting dappled patterns on the ground where Ryan stood. He looked down at her, standing right in the golden light, his eyes focused only on her.
The sharp angle of his brow cast a slight shadow over his deep-set eyes, and in that moment, it felt like Amelia was the only person in his world.
For a split second, Clive flashed through her mind. He had those same captivating eyes—the kind that made you think you were the center of his universe, even if it was all just for show.
Snapping herself out of it, Amelia instinctively took a step back, putting a little space between them.
Ryan noticed right away, but he didn’t push. He just slipped his hands into his pockets, relaxed, like he wasn’t in any hurry at all.
“Didn’t you say you wanted to see me?” His voice was calm, even gentle. “Well, here I am. What did you want to talk about?”
She had a million things she wanted to ask, but now wasn’t the right time.
“Are you free later? Let me buy you dinner,” Amelia said, trying to keep her voice steady.
If Ryan had really spent the last five years looking after her mother’s grave, then honestly, she owed him way more than just a meal.
Ryan’s phone started buzzing again. He pulled it out and glanced at the screen. Amelia, standing close, caught the name “Zoe” on the caller ID.
Without missing a beat, Ryan hung up and looked over at Amelia. “Find somewhere cool to wait for me, okay?” he said, then turned and headed off to meet Mr. Baker.
A little pavilion stood not far away. Amelia started in that direction, but before she could get there, her phone rang. It was Miranda, Diana’s assistant.
Worried, Amelia answered right away. “Hey, Miranda, what’s going on?”
Miranda sounded like she was about to cry. “Amelia, you have to come quick! Diana lost the lead in Mr. Schuck’s movie… Oh my god, Diana, please stop drinking!”
In the background, Diana’s voice rang out, slurring her words, “I can drink all night! This is nothing!”
Amelia’s heart tightened. Diana was definitely drunk.
“Miranda, just send me the address. I’m coming now!”
“Okay!”
Amelia hurried out, quickly texting Ryan: Something urgent came up, I have to go. Let’s do dinner another time—I owe you.
