Diana had worked her way up, role after role, until she finally won Best Actress at the film festival. She loved acting with her whole heart. Mr. Schuck’s new movie was even called “The Leading Lady,” and Diana wanted the part for more than just the paycheck—she saw herself in Lily Harper, the main character.
She spent months getting ready for the film, and Amelia had been over the moon when Diana landed the role. Nobody thought that after the contract was signed, someone richer could just come in and snatch the part away.
Amelia felt furious for her friend as she listened. She rubbed Diana’s back while Diana cried so hard her whole body shook, whispering gentle words until the tears finally ran out and Diana dozed off on her shoulder.
Once Diana was asleep, Amelia laid her on the couch and tucked a blanket around her. Then she turned to Miranda. “What exactly happened?”
Miranda’s story made everything clear. The movie’s biggest backer was a sleazy coal tycoon named Collin. Before filming started, there was a dinner with all the investors, producers, and the main cast. Collin had started making moves on Diana right away—handsy, inappropriate, the whole deal.
Mr. Schuck tried to step in, but everyone knew the money guy called the shots. Diana made an excuse to go to the bathroom, hoping to escape, but Collin cornered her in the hallway. He was drunk and crossed even more lines. Diana, never one to take crap from anyone, kicked him hard enough that he nearly doubled over.
But the studio pressured her to go back and apologize. Collin made her drink as a “punishment.” She forced herself to do it, wanting to keep the peace, but ended up drinking until she was sick. That’s when she realized Collin was just humiliating her for fun. Then he threatened to pull his investment and even call the cops unless Mr. Schuck replaced Diana with his own girlfriend.
By the end, Amelia was fuming. “And Diana’s agency just sits back and does nothing?”
Miranda shook her head. “They’re awful. They take a huge cut, book her for terrible jobs to make fast money, and now that she’s planning to leave when her contract ends, they’re not helping. Actually, they’re spreading rumors that she’s got a temper and hits people on set.”
Miranda’s voice trembled with anger. “Today, Collin was here to meet someone, and Diana showed up to confront him. She didn’t even make it inside—his bodyguards stopped her at the door. If Will hadn’t happened to walk by and help, things would’ve been even uglier.”
Amelia took a deep breath, trying to calm herself.
She looked at Diana, who was still drunk and half asleep. “Let’s take her to my place. If the paparazzi catch her here, it’ll turn into an even bigger mess.”
“Yeah, that’s probably best,” Miranda agreed.
