Once Will was gone, Miranda couldn’t hold back her curiosity.
“Amelia, are you sure Will doesn’t have a thing for you?”
“Don’t be silly. He’s just an old friend.”
“Uh-huh. Well, he’s awfully sweet, you know. Not everyone would help out like this.”
Amelia thought of how gentle Will had been with Kristen and answered softly, “Yeah, he’s a good guy. He’s nice to everyone.”
Amelia and Miranda helped Diana out to the front door, where Will was already waiting with his car pulled up. Together, they got Diana upstairs and into her room. She was half-drunk and barely awake, so Amelia and Miranda teamed up to get her out of her dress, wipe off her makeup, and clean her up a little.
Will came in carrying a bowl of soup.
“I had the hotel kitchen whip this up. Ms. Brooks should feel better after this,” he offered.
“Thank you.” Amelia took the bowl. Will, always thoughtful, stepped back out to give them space.
After helping Diana drink the soup, Amelia settled her back against the pillows. Just in case Diana got sick in her sleep, Amelia asked Miranda to stay and keep an eye on her.
She slipped out of the room, wanting to thank Will again. The living room was empty, so she looked around and finally spotted Will out on the balcony, talking on his phone.
Amelia didn’t want to intrude. She flopped onto the sofa and checked her own phone. She’d texted Ryan, but he still hadn’t replied. Maybe Mr. Baker was keeping him busy. It felt weird to keep sending messages, so she just waited.
Just then, Will came back inside, slipping his phone into his pocket.
“Amelia,” he said.
She stood up to meet him. “Will, I really mean it—thank you for everything tonight. And about your shirt, let me cover the cost.”
He went on, “Look, I’m not asking you to change your mind overnight. I just hope you’ll give me a chance—a real chance to pursue you. If I ever do anything that makes you uncomfortable or upset, you can tell me straight up. I’ll work on it, I promise.”
Amelia looked away, not daring to meet his intense gaze.
“Will, you’re a great guy, but I only see you as a friend. Please don’t waste your time on me.”
Will’s voice softened even more. “No one knows what the future holds. You know, lots of people go from old friends to soulmates. Why not us?”
Amelia rubbed her forehead, feeling a headache coming on. Why wouldn’t he just let this go?
“Will—”
He cut her off. “Nothing you say will change my mind. I’m not giving up and, honestly, I have every right to go after a single woman.”
