Will flashed a grin and steered the conversation somewhere else. “I just asked around. That Collin guy? Sure, he’s rich, but he’s also a total creep.”
He got serious. “He’s harassed a ton of actresses, always picking on the ones without any connections. Most just put up with it, but Ms. Brooks? She’s not the type to back down. I already had a word with some people I know…”
Translation: he was handling Diana’s situation.
Amelia started to say something. “Will, you really don’t have to—”
Will cut her off. “I see Ms. Brooks as a friend. I just want to stick up for her. You’re not going to turn that down for her, are you?”
Amelia fell silent.
Two hours later, Diana woke up from her nap.
Will was long gone, called away by work as usual, but he’d made sure to order food for her ahead of time. When Diana woke up, there was a meal waiting just for her.
Everything was light and easy on the stomach.
As she sipped her seafood porridge, Diana mumbled, “Will’s honestly so thoughtful.”
“If anything ever happens, you need to tell me right away.” Amelia couldn’t help but frown as she took in Diana’s tired, makeup-free face.
Diana was always slim, but she’d lost even more weight for this role, and in the end, she didn’t even get the part.
“I’m alright. I’ll be fine after a good cry. Stuff like this happens to me all the time.” Diana sniffed, and a single tear slipped out. She stirred her porridge like nothing was wrong, then swallowed it down.
She looked up at Amelia and gave her a bright, determined smile. “Don’t worry about me. The sky isn’t going to fall. But what about you? After you divorced Clive, has that jerk made things hard for you? And what about Kristen, that shameless woman?”
“Don’t worry about me.” Amelia’s eyes turned a little distant. “In three days, a lot of things will be settled.”
Diana knew Amelia was sharp—she always had a plan. Diana, on the other hand, was really only good at acting. The only thing she could do was be there for Amelia when she needed her, and support her quietly the rest of the time.
Diana had barely finished eating when she got a call about a new audition.
She immediately perked up, jumping to her feet to fix her makeup and get ready to head out.
Amelia couldn’t help herself. “Diana, if you need money to pay off your debts—”
Diana paused, cushion in hand, and for once, she looked truly serious. “Amelia, my dad hurt a lot of people, a lot of families. I lived all those years not realizing our nice life was built on their blood, sweat, and tears. My dad’s paying for it in prison. Out here, it’s my turn. The Brooks family has to pay back that debt—no one else.”
Amelia knew how stubborn Diana could be, so she didn’t push it.
