Timmy looked over his shoulder, a little surprised. “When did you come upstairs?”
“I just got here. I wasn’t wandering around.” Penny’s chubby little hands were nearly pulling all the hair out of her doll. She tried to sound casual. “Hey, who are you FaceTiming, big bro?”
“Mom,” Timmy said, then offered, “Wanna say hi?”
Penny hesitated, staring down at her feet, her round belly swaying from side to side. “She probably doesn’t want to talk to me, does she?”
Last time, Mom had told her she had to pick between Momma Kristen and her, but Penny just couldn’t decide. After that, Mom never called her again.
But Timmy still talked to Mom all the time. They’d call and chat and laugh like nothing had changed.
Penny always watched from the side, pretending not to care, but her chest hurt just a little bit.
Maybe Momma Kristen was right. Maybe Mom really didn’t want her anymore...
Amelia knew her daughter too well. She saw the awkwardness and worry in Penny’s eyes, and it made her own heart ache.
“Penny, sweetheart, Mommy misses you so much. Come here and let Mommy see you, okay?” Amelia’s gentle voice came through the phone.
Penny’s head snapped up, her eyes sparkling. She shuffled over, a little awkward, and waved at the screen.
“You see me now, right?” Penny said, lips pressed together as she tried to play it cool. “Next Saturday, I wanna ride the Ferris wheel. Tina and the other girls already went. If you’re super, super free and you really, really wanna see me, you can come with me and Timmy...”
Amelia smiled, her voice warm and soft. “Mommy misses you so much, baby. I’ll see if I can get permission to go with you and your brother, okay?”
Penny’s mouth twitched up, trying to look unimpressed, but she was already grinning.
“Fine... I guess.”
Timmy rolled his eyes. His little sister was such a kid sometimes.
Out in the hallway, Clive stood quietly in the corner, listening to the laughter spilling out from the room. Amelia’s voice was so gentle, so patient with the kids.
His eyes darkened, a wave of bitterness passing through him.
Back when Amelia was pregnant, Clive had known she’d be the best mom in the world. For her, nothing mattered more than family. She loved both kids, and there was a time she loved him too, more than anything.
Today at the Baker family’s house, he’d finally seen the truth. Amelia hadn’t lied. Kristen was the one who’d fooled him.
But now, how could he fix any of it?
