The second Susie walked in, Kristen’s eyes did a quick sweep of the room. As expected, Amelia was nowhere to be seen.

She must’ve been shown the door by Dr. Borgen the moment she arrived. Kristen couldn’t help the smug little smile creeping onto her face.

Susie headed straight for her, still as frosty as ever. “Come on in. Dr. Borgen will see you now.”

Kristen didn’t take it personally. Susie was famous for her ice queen act in academic circles.

With her birthday gift for Mrs. Borgen and her research paper in hand, Kristen walked inside. Greg, who’d been dragged into a lesson by Dr. Wade, glanced up in surprise when he saw her.

Robert just looked calm and polite, barely nodding when Kristen shot him a smile and a greeting.

“Dr. Borgen, Mrs. Borgen, sorry to interrupt,” Kristen said smoothly. “I brought you a birthday gift, Mrs. Borgen—a set of top-shelf South Sea pearls. Necklace, earrings, bracelet. I hope you’ll like them.”

Out of the corner of her eye, Kristen spotted another jewelry box on the table—the one Amelia had picked up yesterday. That had to be Amelia’s gift.

Kristen almost laughed. Her pearls cost at least ten times whatever Amelia could afford. Mrs. Borgen loved pearls. She’d definitely notice the difference.

But Mrs. Borgen just glanced at the box and looked away. “Ms. Watts, thank you, but this is far too generous. You should take it back and give it to someone in your own family.”

“Mrs. Borgen…” Kristen tried to protest, but Mrs. Borgen had already turned away and started serving herself, making it clear she wasn’t interested in talking more.

Left with no other choice, Kristen kept her smile plastered on and set the gift down anyway. “Mrs. Borgen, it’s a Watts family tradition. Once we give a birthday present, we don’t take it back. Besides, I really think only pearls this beautiful match your elegance.”

Mrs. Borgen gave her a little smile, one Kristen couldn’t quite read. “Ms. Watts, you really do have a way with words.”

Kristen was still puzzling that over when Dr. Borgen spoke up. “Susie tells me you have a paper you’re eager for me to read?”

“Yes, Dr. Borgen. I know you’ve been focusing on physics lately, especially molecular restructuring. I actually minored in physics at university and I’m really interested in your field. Here’s my paper.” Kristen handed it over with total confidence.
