Amelia cut him off.
“You don’t have to explain yourself to me. Who you meet is your business,” she said, her voice steady. “But you do need to answer to the military and Dr. Wade. All the data you gave Kristen is classified.”
Will let out a half-laugh, half-sigh. “I should’ve known you’d figure it out. Don’t worry, Amelia. I’m not running from this. I’ve already stepped away from the project, and I’m done talking to Kristen, too.”
“Who you talk to is up to you,” Amelia repeated, sounding almost tired. “Will, you don’t owe me an explanation.”
He looked down and gave a crooked smile. “Okay. As long as you don’t hate me, that’s all I care about.”
Amelia pinched the bridge of her nose. “Will, I don’t hate you. But I don’t like you either—not in that way.”
“I never thought you’d change your mind overnight,” Will said, looking at her with that gentle, patient expression of his. “I’m willing to wait. However long it takes.”
Amelia drew in a slow breath, ready to say something more, but just then, Timmy came out of his room, backpack slung over his shoulders.
“Mom, I’m ready!” Timmy announced, eyeing the two adults with curiosity. “What were you guys talking about?”
Amelia quickly composed herself and smiled at her son. “Just some grown-up stuff, sweetheart. Let’s go, I’ll take you to school. Uncle Will has work to do, so say goodbye.”
“Bye, Uncle Will!”
