The car rolled to a stop in front of the school. Amelia got out and walked Timmy to the entrance.
Timmy was like a little celebrity here. Before they even reached the gates, a bunch of curious kids had already swarmed around him.
“Timmy, who’s that lady with you?”
Timmy stuck out his tiny chest, proud as could be. “That’s my mom. She’s going to be picking me up from now on.”
“How come we’ve never seen your mom before?”
“She was sick before, but now she’s all better,” Timmy explained, matter-of-fact.
“Your mom looks so nice and pretty!”
Timmy grinned, practically glowing. “Of course. My mom’s also super smart.”
Amelia listened from behind, the sunlight warming her shoulders and her heart. In that moment, she realized happiness could make you want to cry just as much as sadness.
Timmy turned back to wave at her. Amelia quickly blinked away the sting in her eyes and waved at her son.
She watched until his little figure disappeared around the corner. Only then did she turn to leave. She had barely taken a few steps when a familiar Bentley pulled up.
Clive got out, looking as put-together as always.
A second later, the back door opened and Kristen stepped out, carefully lifting Penny out after her. Penny was dressed up in a cute little dress, and she wrapped her arms around Kristen’s neck, giving her a kiss on the cheek and whispering something that made Kristen smile and stroke her hair.
Clive stood by, watching with a protective look. For a second, they looked just like a perfect little family.
Penny waved goodbye to them. “Bye, Daddy! Bye, Mama Kristen! You both have to come pick me up tonight too, okay?”
Kristen smiled gently. “Of course, sweetie.”
Penny’s ponytail bounced as she turned to go inside. Then she spotted Amelia standing nearby. The bright smile on her face vanished. She looked away, pretending not to see Amelia, and hurried past.
