“If you want me to drop the charges, fine, Kristen. You and your mom, Bianca, can both just go die. Maybe then, you can beg my mother for forgiveness in the afterlife.” Amelia’s smile was cold, almost cruel. “If my mom ever comes to me in a dream and tells me she forgives you, tells me to let Hank off the hook, I’ll drop the case right then and there.”
The silence was heavy.
Kristen bit her lip, looking completely lost and helpless.
Clive’s eyes were full of disappointment as he looked at Amelia. “Amelia, you used to be the kindest person I knew…”
“So kindness means I should just let you all walk all over me until it kills me?” Amelia shot back, her gaze flicking between the two of them holding each other, her tone dripping with sarcasm. “Clive, you know, you made a vow at our wedding. You promised you’d love me, never betray me. Guess that didn’t last long, did it?”
Clive’s face tightened, his guilt obvious.
Amelia wasn’t interested in arguing anymore. She yanked open the car door, got in, and sped off without another word.
Kristen sank into Clive’s arms, her whole body trembling. “Clive, my dad is really going to prison this time, isn’t he…”
Clive gently rubbed her back, trying to comfort her. “I’ll talk to her again before the court date. You just had surgery, you’re still weak. Don’t stress yourself out, okay?”
He’d only found out about the surgery last night. He’d gone over to the Watts family home to be with Kristen, who was so anxious about her father’s arrest she couldn’t sleep. When he went to get her some sleeping pills, he saw her surgery records by accident.
He used to think Kristen’s talk about not wanting kids after marriage, about focusing on Timmy and Penny and treating them like her own, was just something she said to sound good. He never thought she’d actually go through with getting her tubes tied.
Clive had been angry with the whole Watts family after what Hank did, even Kristen. But holding that surgery report, seeing Kristen looking so fragile, his anger melted away.
Whatever happened between Hank and Norma, whoever was at fault, that was their problem. Kristen had nothing to do with it.
“Clive, you’re not going to leave me, are you?” Kristen’s voice was so small, her grip on him so tight.
Clive kissed the top of her head. “Don’t say stuff like that. We’re still getting engaged, nothing’s changed.”
Even if Hank did go to jail, the Watts family still had more than enough to offer. Of course, it would be better if Hank got out of this mess.
Mr. Baker held his phone in one hand, his eyes—old but still sharp—fixed on the chess pieces. His voice was low and commanding. “Shane, just do your job. Don’t worry about anyone getting in your way. I’ll handle it.”
Just then, an aide in military uniform hurried in, looking tense.
“Mr. Baker, the paternity test results are here! I brought them myself—nobody else touched them!” The aide handed over a sealed envelope.
Mr. Baker didn’t reach for it. Instead, he glanced at his grandson, a knowing look in his eyes and a hint of annoyance.
“Let him open it,” he said, rolling his eyes. “You barely ever come to this study, and now you’re here three times a day. Don’t act like you’re worried about your old grandpa.”
Felix just smiled, not bothering to argue. He broke the seal, read the results, and raised his eyebrows, smiling like he knew exactly what to expect.
He handed the envelope to Mr. Baker.
“Here, Grandpa. Take a look.”
