She was never going to let Amelia, that snake, get anywhere near the Salmeron family again.
…
Kristen and Clive had dinner together at the Watts family estate. The house was quiet, just the two of them sitting across from each other at the huge dining table. Ever since Hank had been taken away, Bianca had locked herself in the prayer room, chanting and praying for a miracle.
Kristen glanced at her phone. Caroline had sent her a video, and as Kristen watched it, her eyes flashed with annoyance. That old witch Donna just couldn’t stay out of her business. She always had to meddle.
Clive caught her expression and frowned. “What’s up?”
Kristen forced a smile. “Nothing. Caroline just sent me a message. She went dress shopping this morning for our engagement party and wanted my opinion.”
Kristen and Caroline had always gotten along well, so Clive didn’t think much of it. Right then, his phone rang and he picked up immediately. “Hello, Haynes.”
“Mr. Salmeron, the commissioner is out of town on business. He’s on a flight right now and can’t take your call.”
Clive’s eyes narrowed. “On a business trip?” He knew that was a lie. He’d already checked Jeffrey’s schedule and the man hadn’t left Alson Creek today.
“Sorry, Mr. Salmeron. Mr. Jeffrey’s really busy these days. Maybe another time, when he has some free time, he’ll invite you to dinner.”
The call ended abruptly.
Clive’s face tightened. He’d already contacted several people in politics and the police, but as soon as they heard Hank’s name, they all made excuses to stay out of it.
Was the Baker family really involved in this?
Before he could think further, Cameron’s name lit up his phone. Clive got up and walked to the side to answer.
“Cameron, what’s going on with the Baker family?”
Cameron didn’t waste time. “The paternity test for Amelia and Mr. Watts is out. She’s not his biological daughter.”
He sounded disgusted. “I paid a lot to bribe an old Baker family housekeeper and found the report in the trash. Turns out, Norma—Amelia’s mom—cheated on Mr. Watts. Amelia isn’t even his kid. And apparently, when Amelia got called over, she wasn’t even there half an hour before Mr. Baker threw her out.”
