The city was mostly asleep, its lights fading under the heavy night sky. But in another part of town, neon signs burned almost brighter than daylight.
Inside Scarlet Bar, the music thumped so loud you could feel it in your bones. The energy in the room was wild, everyone riding wave after wave of sound. Caroline was right in the middle of it, dancing like she didn’t have a care in the world, surrounded by her friends. She’d just left her brother Clive’s place, promising she’d go home and get some rest, but the second she was out the door, she texted her friends to meet her out. After being stuck abroad for so long, she was desperate to let loose.
Now that she’d finally moved out of the Salmeron family’s old mansion, she actually had a life again. She could go wherever she wanted and do whatever she liked. The internet was busy chasing new scandals every day, and all her old drama had finally faded into the background.
“Caroline, my cousin just got back from overseas. Want me to introduce you?” Sylvia shouted, leaning in so Caroline could hear her over the music. Sylvia’s family ran a lumber business, which made them the underdogs in their social circle.
Caroline knew about Sylvia’s cousin. His family had just a bit more money than the McDonalds, but that wasn’t saying much, and he wasn’t exactly easy on the eyes. Caroline couldn’t care less.
She acted like she hadn’t heard a thing. Sylvia didn’t try again. She just forced a smile and slid over to grind against the young actor she’d brought along.
Caroline brushed off two guys who tried to hit on her and made her way back to her booth for a drink. The lights were dim and as she turned, she bumped into someone.
“Sorry,” the man said, steadying her with a careful hand. His voice was deep, smooth, and there was something familiar about it.
Caroline froze. She remembered him—the man who’d helped her out of a mess when she was overseas. She looked up, her eyes locking on his face, and for a second she forgot how to breathe.
Felix recognized that look. He’d seen it a million times.
He gave her a polite nod and let go, already turning to leave. He’d only come out tonight for a quick catch-up with friends before heading home. He was just about done with the noise and ready to disappear. But Caroline grabbed his arm.
“Wait!” she blurted out, her voice a little too loud. “Mr. Baker, it’s you!”
Felix’s eyes lingered on her face for a moment, but he clearly didn’t remember her. Pretty women were everywhere in his world.
“Do we know each other?”
“I’m Caroline. Remember? That time overseas, I got mugged and you helped me out?”
