“I know him. That’s Felix Baker, the son of the Baker family. He’s not a bad guy,” Amelia said.
Donna’s eyes widened. Of course she knew the Bakers.
“That’s wild,” she said, sounding genuinely surprised. “I never thought Jinx would be mixed up with the Bakers. Jinx even called him ‘uncle’!”
“Wait, you’re saying Jinx knows Felix?” For once, Amelia was caught off guard. She glanced at Jinx, her curiosity piqued.
She’d once asked their homeroom teacher, Ms. Arnold, about Jinx’s background, but Ms. Arnold had just said Jinx was a poor kid with a tough life, and wouldn’t say any more. But honestly, kids who could afford this posh private school weren’t exactly struggling.
Still, Amelia never would’ve guessed Jinx had any kind of connection to Felix.
She didn’t get a chance to ask about it, though. There was a knock at the door.
A uniformed officer stepped in. It was Shane.
“Ms. Sadinton,” he greeted.
Jinx recognized him right away and greeted him politely. “Hello, Officer.”
Shane smiled back at her, warm and friendly. “Hey there. Looks like we keep running into each other, huh?”
Amelia turned to Donna. “Donna, could you take Jinx home for me? And bring Timmy too. I need to talk to Shane alone for a minute.”
“I wanna stay,” Timmy piped up, lifting his hand like he was in class. “Mom, can I hang out with you?”
Amelia reached out and gently cupped his cheek. “Be good, Timmy. I’m totally safe here. If you stay, I’ll get distracted and won’t be able to help Officer Shane with his questions. The faster I help, the sooner the bad guys get caught, right?”
Timmy thought about it, then bargained, “If I go, can I skip school tomorrow and spend the whole day with you? I swear I won’t miss any homework!”
