The Salmeron family’s villa had a different vibe these days. Two new housekeepers had moved in—Jillian and Natalia—both handpicked by the old lady herself.

Jillian was always in the kitchen, cooking up something delicious. Natalia hung around the living room, supposedly tidying up. But honestly, her eyes barely left Kristen and Penny, who were sitting together on the couch.

Penny was stacking blocks, her face scrunched up in concentration.

“Momma Kristen, I saw my brother after school today,” she mumbled, sounding all kinds of glum. “But he ignored me. Jinx ignored me too… Do you know Jinx?”

She clutched a yellow block, looking up at Kristen with big, hopeful eyes.

“She’s the skinniest girl in our class. She used to get picked on a lot, and I always stuck up for her. But now, she doesn’t want to be my friend anymore.”

Kristen only half listened. Her mind kept looping back to the news that Amelia was alive. And to make things worse, her own mom Bianca had vanished that afternoon. Now she didn’t even have anyone to help her figure out what to do.

“Why not just play with some other kids?” Kristen said, barely paying attention.

Penny stuck out her lip. “Obviously, I have other friends. I play with Tina and Sookie all the time. They’re my real friends. I just felt bad for Jinx, so I let her hang out with us. If she doesn’t want to, whatever.”

Her voice trailed off, getting softer. The truth was, it wasn’t Jinx that made her so upset. It was her brother. Ever since that day at the amusement park, he hadn’t come home once.

Penny kept replaying that afternoon. She remembered seeing a clown with bright red hair and running over. Then suddenly, Momma Kristen was there, smelling so nice, and Penny felt sleepy—so, so sleepy. Next thing she knew, she was in the car heading home with Kristen.

And as for Amelia—her real mom—Penny just kept her head down, too scared to say her name around Kristen. She’d made her choice. Since she picked Momma Kristen, that meant she wasn’t allowed to talk about or see Amelia anymore.

Her brother had probably chosen his real mom, too. That thought made Penny’s chest ache.

She suddenly jumped up and kicked over the castle she’d spent forever building.
