Jinx nodded sweetly. “Okay. Mrs. Sadinton, I’ll let Uncle Felix talk to you now.”
She handed the phone over to Felix.
His voice was easy to recognize—deep, steady, and just a little warm. “Ms. Sadinton, are you feeling any better today?” He was always polite, never in a rush.
Amelia replied, “Thank you for checking in. I’m fine, really. But Mr. Baker, why did you take Jinx with you?”
Felix was lounging on the couch in his spacious penthouse, relaxed but still keeping an eye on Jinx. She looked so tiny, kneeling on the big, soft carpet, completely focused on a jigsaw puzzle.
From the kitchen, the housekeeper was busy making breakfast. The whole place felt calm and safe.
Except for one thing.
Felix’s gaze drifted to the bruises on Jinx’s arm—faint purple marks in the shape of someone’s fingers.
No wonder her family made her wear long sleeves to school and warned her not to say a word.
He felt a tight squeeze in his chest.
Last night, he’d called in a female doctor to take a look at her. When the doctor asked what happened and if it hurt, Jinx just glanced at Felix instead of answering. She was trying to figure out how he’d react.
He frowned without realizing it, and Jinx seemed to shrink into herself, thinking he was upset with her. She shook her head and mumbled, “It doesn’t hurt…”
That kind of answer only comes from a kid who’s used to living under too much pressure.
“Mr. Baker?” Amelia’s voice came through the phone, a little sharper now after waiting for his reply.
Felix pulled himself back to the conversation. “It’s not so easy to explain over the phone. Ms. Sadinton, when are you getting discharged? Jinx has been worried about you. I thought we could pick you up. Plus, my grandfather keeps asking about you. If we meet, I can update him properly.”
He gave her two good reasons she couldn’t really argue with.
Amelia hesitated for a moment, then gave in. “All right. I’m getting out this afternoon.”
Felix glanced at his watch. “I’ll book a restaurant. Is it okay if I pick you up at six?”
