“Amelia, can you just give me one more chance?” Clive’s voice was rough, his eyes red and desperate. “We’ve been together for so many years, and we have two kids—”
“Absolutely not!” Amelia cut him off, her stomach turning at the thought. “If you bother me again, I won’t hold back for the kids’ sake. I’ll call the police. Don’t test me.”
“Amelia…” Clive tried to say something else, but Patrick appeared out of nowhere and shoved him aside, stepping protectively between them.
“You okay?” Patrick asked, his gaze full of concern.
“I’m fine.”
“Miss, you should head upstairs,” Patrick said, never taking his eyes off Clive. His fists were clenched, ready to step in if Clive tried anything else.
“Patrick, don’t,” Amelia said, grabbing his arm to stop him.
Clive’s face lit up for a split second, thinking she still cared. But Amelia turned away and waved down two security guards making their rounds.
“Excuse me, this man’s harassing me. Can you handle it?”
She wasn’t worried about Clive getting hurt. She just didn’t want Patrick to get dragged into trouble.
The guards surrounded Clive instantly.
As Amelia made her way upstairs, she could hear Clive yelling behind her, “I’m her ex-husband! I’m the father of her kids! Let me go! Amelia—”
She didn’t even look back. The elevator doors closed, shutting out his voice.
At her door, Amelia had barely reached for her keys when the door swung open and Timmy appeared in the entryway, clearly waiting for her.
“Mom! You’re finally home. We saved dinner for you.”
Seeing her son’s sweet, innocent face, Amelia felt her heart melt. “Thank you, honey.”
She noticed a few moving boxes stacked in the living room.
Donna poked her head out from the kitchen. “Ma’am, I’ll warm up your dinner. Just a minute.”
“Oh, that’s not necessary,” Donna said, waving her off. “Once you’re at work and Timmy’s in school, I’ll be able to finish up by myself. You pay me twenty thousand a month, plus grocery money. All I do is make breakfast and dinner and tidy up a bit. It’s so much easier than it was at the villa! There was always so much to do, and the atmosphere was just exhausting. Every day I had to look at that stubborn Salmeron family—honestly, I thought I’d lose years off my life!”
She dropped her voice at the mention of Clive, not wanting Timmy, who was sitting on the couch, to hear.
Amelia just smiled. She didn’t mention that Clive had tailed Donna all the way here; no point making her worry.
After dinner, Amelia got a text from building management. Clive was officially blacklisted. He wouldn’t be allowed into the community again.
She changed into her pajamas and spent some time playing with Timmy.
He was fiddling with his Rubik’s cube when he suddenly looked up. “Mom, Grandma’s birthday is next week. Are you really not going?”
“I have to work that day. Donna will take you,” Amelia said calmly.
“Oh, okay.” Timmy pressed his lips together, clearly wanting to say more.
Amelia put down what she was doing and looked at him seriously. “Sweetie, is there something you want to talk to me about?”
