Amelia never expected Clive and Ryan to end up in the same group.
But now that it happened, there was no undoing it.
Timmy glanced at his dad’s stormy face, then at Ryan, not sure who he was supposed to root for.
“Timmy!” Penny called out, waving frantically. “Come here! Aren’t you going to cheer for Daddy and me?”
Timmy hesitated, caught in the middle. In the end, he decided not to take sides.
“Shane’s looking for me, so I’ll head back to my class, Penny. I’ll come find you later, okay? Bye Dad, Mom, Uncle Ryan.” And with that, Timmy made a quick getaway.
This was way too much for a kid. He couldn’t possibly make it fair for everyone.
“Go, Uncle Ryan!” Jinx cheered with all her might, her tiny fists pumping in the air.
Ryan gave her a little nod, then glanced past her to Amelia. “Don’t I get some encouragement too?”
“Are you a little kid?” Amelia couldn’t help but laugh. For a moment, Ryan seemed so much like a big, lovable dog craving attention.
She tiptoed closer and ruffled his hair. “Good luck, Mr. Packman.” She smiled, about to pull her hand back, but Ryan caught her wrist and pulled her into his arms.
He glanced at Jinx. “Jinx, close your eyes.”
Jinx obediently covered her eyes with both hands.
Before Amelia even had time to react, Ryan’s face was suddenly right in front of hers. His lips brushed hers, gentle and warm, and he gave her a playful little nip, his eyes full of laughter.
“All done,” he said.
Amelia’s face went crimson, her ears burning. There were people everywhere.
She pushed at his chest, flustered. “I didn’t realize you could be so—so shameless…”
Ryan just grinned wider. “Ms. Sadinton, you’re my girlfriend. This isn’t shameless. This is—” He leaned in, his voice low in her ear, “just can’t help myself.”
Amelia’s ears turned even redder. “Okay, enough. Go already!”
Ryan finally let her go and walked to his place on the field.
Clive was already waiting, watching the whole scene. His heart twisted at the sight of Amelia and Ryan so close, and his face was so dark, Ms. Arnold almost dropped the bungee cord as she tried to help him.
“Mr. Salmeron, if you’d rather not be paired with Mr. Packman, I can see if anyone wants to switch—”
“No need.” Clive cut her off, glaring at Ryan. “I’m not the one who’s going to be embarrassed here.”
He was determined—Amelia would finally see who was the better man.
Ryan cast a lazy look over his shoulder at Clive, twisting the knife. “Looks like your core strength needs some work, Salmeron.”
Clive’s face went green. He looked like he was about to explode.
“Yay! Uncle Ryan, you’re awesome!” Jinx jumped up and down, dragging Amelia with her to get her prize.
Penny scowled after them and threw her cake to the ground in a huff.
She overheard a group of kids whispering behind her.
“Who’s that Uncle Ryan with Jinx? He’s so handsome! He looks even better than Penny’s dad!”
“He totally looks like a prince from a cartoon.”
“Why is Penny’s nanny with Jinx? Is she really Jinx’s mom? She’s so pretty!”
Penny’s cheeks turned bright red. She spun around and yelled, “She’s not that little beggar’s mom! She’s my mom!”
Timmy had been watching everything from the sidelines. He figured Dad couldn’t beat Uncle Ryan and knew his little sister hated losing. He’d brought over his own gold medal from earlier to cheer Penny up, but then he heard her call Jinx a little beggar.
“Penny! You can’t say that about Jinx!” Timmy said, face serious. “Jinx’s mom and dad are amazing Doctors Without Borders. They couldn’t be with her because they were out there saving lives! Penny, you owe her an apology!”
