Karma Doesn’t Sleep The Revenge Queen Rises novel Chapter 655

Amelia shot Susie an apologetic smile. “Let’s catch up later, okay?”

She stepped into Dr. Wade’s office. “You wanted to see me?”

“Come in, Amelia. Have a seat,” Dr. Wade said, motioning to the chair across from him. He poured her a glass of water, then sat down beside her with his usual warm smile. “Now that you’ve wrapped up your work on the Green Wall project, I wanted to see what your plans are.”

Amelia hesitated for a second. “I’ve got something personal I need to take care of. It’s pretty important.”

“I see,” Dr. Wade said, pushing his glasses up his nose. He didn’t pry.

“Dr. Wade, you don’t have to hold back. If you have something to say, just say it,” Amelia said, cupping the glass in her hands.

He smiled. “You’ve really proven yourself these past few months. I was just talking to Jared about you. You know, after graduation, you could’ve gone straight into one of the top research institutes. It’s a pity things didn’t work out that way.”

Amelia’s lips curled into a wry smile. “Everyone has to pay for the dumb decisions they made when they were younger. I’ve made my peace with it.”

“Let’s not dwell on the past. Let me ask: if you had another shot, a better opportunity, would you want to dive back into scientific research? Would you want to be part of something that could really make a difference?”

“I would,” Amelia answered, her voice steady. That had always been her dream, once upon a time.

Dr. Wade nodded, clearly pleased. “The International Science Research Association has started a new talent program. They’re picking the top one hundred young experts in the world. Dr. Borgen and I have both recommended you.”

Amelia blinked, caught off guard. “Dr. Wade, but I haven’t really done anything impressive these past few years…”

He waved her off. “We know what you’re capable of. If you had a little time to get back up to speed, I’m sure you’d accomplish great things. Besides, you’re not the only one we nominated. We also put forward three other young scholars, including Greg. But it all depends on the Swiss committee. We should hear back by next spring at the latest.”

“Thank you. Really. Please thank Dr. Borgen for me, too,” Amelia said, genuinely grateful.

Dr. Wade’s eyes twinkled with mischief. “If you didn’t have the talent, we wouldn’t have anything to recommend, would we?”

Amelia smiled and took a sip of water.

“There’s one more thing,” he said. “A biomedical startup—just got listed, actually—needs a technical consultant. The company was founded by an old friend’s son. They just want someone to look over a few things, make sure everything’s solid.” He looked at her. “You’ve finished up your projects here, so I thought I’d ask if you’re available. If not, I can find someone else.”

“Could you send me his contact info, Dr. Wade?” Amelia asked. “That way we can be sure it’s him when we meet.”

“Of course. Head to the main entrance and I’ll text you his number.”

Amelia and Greg walked out together. As they reached the front entrance, Amelia’s phone buzzed. She stopped in her tracks, staring at the screen.

Greg glanced back. “What’s wrong, Amelia?”

She frowned at the number Dr. Wade had sent her. She knew it all too well. Not because she’d tried to memorize it, but because she’d had to deal with its owner for so many years.

“Amelia? You okay?” Greg asked, sounding worried.

Before she could answer, a silver Mercedes glided up to the curb. The back window rolled down and a face appeared—a face Amelia really, really didn’t want to see.

Cameron looked out at her, surprise flickering across his features before he frowned. “What are you doing here?” Then he seemed to put the pieces together. “Wait—you’re the consultant Dr. Wade recommended?”
