Lady Warrior's Warth on Divorce Day novel Chapter 102

Chapter 102

It was a news report about the border fire from five years ago. Zoya’s heart suddenly tightened.

The fire had broken out near the Luspool City border, a massive blaze that spread rapidly. The entire city’s firefighting force had been mobilized, and even neighboring cities sent reinforcements. It took a full day and night before the fire was finally extinguished.

Zoya’s elder brother had gone missing along that same border, so of course, she had paid close attention to the incident

back then.

She’d checked the list of victims from that disaster, but her brother’s name was nowhere to be found.

None of the nearby hospitals had any record of him being admitted. She and the military investigators had personally questioned several of the firefighters who participated in the rescue, yet not a single one of them had seen him.

To this day, she still didn’t know if her brother’s disappearance was connected to that fire. Maybe he had already vanished before the blaze even started.

But if he was still alive, Zoya couldn’t understand why he hadn’t come back. What could possibly be keeping him away?

“Jasmine, why do you look so pale? Are you feeling unwell?” Nicolas’s voice suddenly rang out.

At that moment, quite a few people around them glanced at Jasmine.

Zoya glanced over and saw that Jasmine’s face was as white as a sheet, with beads of sweat forming on her forehead and rolling down her cheeks.

The hall was cool enough that sweating made no sense.

To Zoya, Jasmine didn’t look ill. She looked frightened. But just getting so rattled by a fire video didn’t really make sense.

“I’m fine… just a little tired, I guess,” Jasmine said, trying to suppress her panic.

‘Who could’ve put that clip up? Was it really a coincidence? Or… Jasmine wondered.

“Hey, Jasmine, isn’t this the same blaze you helped put out?” Daphne spoke up suddenly.

Jasmine froze, and Daphne, clearly savoring the attention, continued to boast, “I remember that was the border fire in Luspool City five years ago. You were still an intern at Cloud Airlines back then.”

She continued, “Instead of running away when you saw the blaze, you rushed in to help, rescuing people, fighting the fire, calling for help, and coordinating with local authorities. Not many people could’ve done that in such a dangerous situation!”

Daphne threw a challenging look Zoya’s way before adding, “I finally understand why Mr. Mayer’s so into you. You’re brave, stand up for what’s right, and risk everything when things get dangerous. If I were a guy, I’d totally fall for you!”

Jasmine’s expression grew even stiffer. The guests, however, were full of admiration. “So Ms. Ingram was that brave?”

“Honestly, she’s braver than most men!”

“Let’s raise a glass to Ms. Ingram’s heroic spirit!”

Glasses were raised in a chorus of toasts, and for a moment, Jasmine became the center of everyone’s praise.

But instead of basking in the attention, her face only grew more sorrowful. “Could you please turn off that news clip? A lot of

people died in that fire. Several firefighters, too. Every time I see that footage, it just brings the pain back.”

The staff hurried to turn off the video, still confused about how the display had switched to a five-year-old news segment in the first place.

Daphne, still unsatisfied, turned to Zoya and said mockingly, “Now this is what a real hero looks like. Not like some people who just talk big. When real danger comes, they’d probably hide like cowards!”

She didn’t name names, but everyone in the room could tell who she meant.

Zoya looked at her calmly. “So what you’re saying is, if something like that happened, you’d rush forward bravely, right? That’s admirable. The Lucero family should be proud to have someone like you. Daphne, I hope you won’t end up being the kind of person who only sounds brave.”

Daphne was instantly silenced. Because after that remark, if she ever faced a real fire and didn’t rush in, she’d be mocked for the rest of her life.

But Daphne was just mouthing off. If a real fire broke out, she’d be running for the exits immediately. Saving someone wouldn’t even cross her mind.

“Nicolas, I don’t feel well. I want to go back to my room,” Jasmine said suddenly.

“I’ll come with you,” Nicolas offered immediately.

“No need. I’ll just rest in my hotel room for a bit,” she replied quickly, not waiting for his response before hurrying away.

Zoya watched her retreating figure, her brow furrowing slightly. Something about Jasmine’s reaction was off.

A woman who loved public praise should have been basking in it. But instead, she seemed desperate to escape it.

“What are you thinking about?” Wren’s voice suddenly sounded beside her.

“Jasmine’s reaction was kind of strange,” Zoya admitted.

“You’re very interested in her reaction?” he asked.

“Just curious, not interested,” she said. Whether Jasmine was truly a hero or not didn’t concern her. But still…

“I once suspected that border fire had something to do with my brother’s disappearance,” Zoya continued softly. “I

investigated it back then. I went through the footage, the reports, but there was no trace of him.”

She added, “His name wasn’t in the casualty list either. I just didn’t expect that Jasmine happened to be part of that fire

rescue.”

“Quite the coincidence,” Wren murmured, lowering his gaze slightly, as if deep in thought.

Meanwhile, Jasmine stumbled back to her hotel room. She grabbed a bottle of liquor, twisted the cap open, and took a long, burning gulp, trying to steady her nerves.

That fire five years ago… it had been the turning point of her life.

Back then, she had just been an intern at Cloud Airlines, her position secured through family connections.

But because of that fire, and her so-called bravery during it, Jasmine was publicly commended by the government and quickly rose to prominence at the airline. Later, Cloud Airlines even sent her abroad for advanced training.

Without that fire, there was no way she could’ve shot up the ranks so fast and become the very first female captain at Cloud Airlines. But that fire….

Jasmine found herself clutching the wine bottle so tight her knuckles turned white.

‘No, it can’t be. Today was just some random fluke. There’s no way anyone could know the secret from all those years ago, Jasmine tried telling herself.

But no matter how hard she tried, her hand kept trembling on its own.

Back at the hall, Zoya had barely gotten out of the bathroom when Nicolas stepped right into her path, refusing to let her

pass.

“Zoya, I need to talk to you,” Nicolas called out.

Zoya shot him an icy look. “There’s nothing I want to talk to you about.”

“I get it. You’re pissed that I divorced you. Fine, blame me all you want, but don’t drag the company into this!” Nicolas said.
