Chapter 103
“What?” Zoya was momentarily stunned.
Nicolas continued, “We founded the company together, and there are so many employees that you know. Can you really bear to see the company in trouble and those colleagues you know get laid off?”
Zoya shot back without hesitation, “Nicolas, if the company is in trouble and needs to lay off employees, that’s your problem. Don’t try to take the moral high ground and dump it on me.”
She continued, “And besides, I remember that in every single interview you’ve ever done, you claimed the company was founded by you alone. So what now? Suddenly, it’s something we built together?”
Nicolas felt a flash of awkwardness. He’d always believed the company was all his doing, and honestly, he’d thought Zoya’s work was so basic, any random project manager could handle it. But now, he wasn’t so sure anymore.
Especially since, to win the island development project, he needed her upgraded patent.
Nicolas said, “I know, everything was my fault, but you shouldn’t take it out on the company! The company needs this island project more than ever. You can’t just destroy it to get revenge on me.”
“Revenge?” Zoya almost laughed. “How did I ‘get revenge’? You used my patent, my proposal, and I simply pointed out the truth at the conference. That’s revenge?”
Nicolas’s mouth twitched. “If you’re not out for revenge, then give me the upgraded version of your patent.”
At that, Zoya suddenly realized that this man was even more shameless than she had imagined.
“Why should I?” she said icily.
“Come on, we were married…” Nicolas tried.
She snapped, “Then tell me, during our so-called marriage, what exactly did you give me? I worked endless nights for the company’s startup, but when it succeeded, the credit had nothing to do with me.”
She added, “You never gave me a single share, a single bonus. When your mother, sister, and friends mocked me, you never once defended me. Now, all of a sudden, you want to talk about how we were husband and wife?”
Nicolas could feel his face grow hot.
Hearing Zoya spell it out so bluntly, he couldn’t help but feel ashamed.
He knew he owed her big time for those three years of marriage.
“I’ll make it up to you,” Nicolas said.
“I don’t need it.” Her voice was like ice as she turned to leave.
“Don’t go…” Nicolas reached out, trying to grab her arm.
But before he could, another hand shot out and clamped down on his wrist. “Mr. Mayer, what exactly do you think you’re doing?”
Wren’s icy voice, paired with his indifferent expression, made Nicolas feel like he was being crushed under a mountain.
“I should be asking you that, Mr. Richmond,” Nicolas stammered, grimacing in pain. It felt as though the man’s grip might
snap his bones.
“Nothing much. I just don’t like you touching Zozo,” Wren replied coolly.
That nickname, Zozo, stung Nicolas like a slap. “And who are you to stop me, Mr. Richmond?”
“I’m her boyfriend. Is that enough?” Wren shot back.
“What?” Nicolas was completely stunned.
Even Zoya looked at Wren in shock. ‘I only said I’d give him a chance. I never actually agreed to date him, did I?’ she wondered.
But with Nicolas standing right there, Zoya didn’t have the heart to ruin Wren’s story. So she just pressed her lips together and tacitly went along with it.
Nicolas’s expression darkened even further.
He’d noticed something between them before, but he’d always believed that deep down, Zoya still had feelings for him.
And yet now, she was really with Wren so soon after their divorce?
His chest tightened with a strange, restless discomfort he couldn’t quite name.
“Are you seriously with him?” Nicolas blurted out, his voice strained.
“Yeah, and what of it?” Zoya shrugged, shooting him a cool look. Then she turned to Wren. “Hands off, Wren. I need a word with you.”
“Sure.” Wren, icy as ever, just did what she asked and released Nicolas’s wrist.
Zoya took Wren by the hand and strode out, not sparing Nicolas a single glance.
Nicolas watched their backs disappear, and an inexplicable wave of panic and restlessness crashed over him.
‘Why do I feel like this?’ he thought, confusion churning inside him.
They were already divorced. Zoya had moved on so quickly. It could mean that she’d never really loved him, that she could change her heart as easily as changing clothes.
He should be glad to be rid of a woman like that. So why was his heart pounding like crazy, his mind in total chaos?
Zoya led Wren to a quiet corner.
“Why did you tell Nicolas you were my boyfriend?” she asked.
“Because one day, I will be,” he said with absolute certainty.
“But what if, when your mission to protect me is over, I still haven’t developed feelings for you? Like I said before. Once it ends, we go our separate ways, no strings attached. You promised, didn’t you?” Zoya pressed.
Wren’s lashes trembled ever so slightly as he leaned in, his face inches from hers, those dark eyes fixed unwaveringly on her.
“So, am I not supposed to make you fall for me?” he murmured, voice low and confident.
With that insanely handsome face suddenly right in front of her, Zoya couldn’t help but nervously swallow.
Is he really pulling the classic heartthrob move on me?’ Zoya thought.
She didn’t know for sure anymore if she wouldn’t fall for him.
Especially when he fixed those smoky eyes on her. Gone was the usual indifference, replaced by an intense, undisguised longing.
With Wren looking at her that way, resisting him felt almost impossible for any woman.
“Fine, but just don’t say you’re my boyfriend again,” Zoya said. Her tone was a little resigned.
Wren’s gaze dulled for a moment, but he still did exactly what Zoya wanted. “Alright, I get it.”
Once the investment conference and charity fundraiser on the island wrapped up, people began drifting away, one after another.
The next day, Zoya and Wren set sail and left the island together.
But when they arrived back at Wren’s villa in Marabotara, an uninvited guest was waiting for them.
It was Logan Richmond, Wren’s father.
Though Zoya had never met him in person, she’d seen his photos online. One glance was enough to recognize him. The Richmond family’s striking looks were hard to forget.
Wren’s expression soured the instant he saw his father. “Why are you here? Didn’t I tell you to stay away from her?”
He positioned himself instinctively in front of Zoya, as though shielding her from danger.
Logan chuckled. “So wary of me? Afraid I’ll hurt your precious girl? Relax. I just heard that on the island, you jumped into the sea with her to save a child. I was… intrigued. Thought I’d come see her for myself.”
Wren’s expression turned stony.
Zoya stepped out from behind him. He reached for her hand, anxious, but she gave him a reassuring look. Then, with calm poise, she faced Logan. “Well, you’ve seen me now. Satisfied?”
Logan cocked an eyebrow. “Seems alright.”
“Okay, you’ve had your look. Now it’s my turn!” Zoya didn’t hesitate. She swung her fist and took a shot right at Logan.
