Chapter 106
Nicolas froze, watching Zoya walk side by side with Wren, surrounded by the senior executives of the Lucero Group. Suddenly, his eyes stung.
Zoya glanced over at him, and for a split second, their eyes met.
Nicolas suddenly tensed up, his heart skipping a beat. He couldn’t even tell why he felt so nervous all of a sudden.
But just as quickly, Zoya looked away, as if he were just some random stranger she’d barely noticed.
A wave of disappointment washed over Nicolas. The woman who used to have eyes only for him now acted as if he wasn’t even worth a glance.
After Jasmine and Nicolas were left standing as the crowd walked past, someone finally approached them, breaking the awkward silence. “Hey Jasmine, Mr. Mayer, you made it.”
Jasmine looked over and recognized Kael Lucero, one of her Lucero cousins from the same generation. He was working in the Lucero Group’s PR department, reporting directly to Daphne.
“Yeah,” Jasmine replied, forcing a polite but somewhat strained smile. “Didn’t expect to see Mr. Richmond and Zoya here today.”
Kael explained, “This island project is a collaboration between the Lucero family and the Richmond family. Of course, Mr. Richmond would come personally. But I didn’t expect him to bring Zoya along.”
As he spoke, he looked at Zoya’s departing figure with a touch of envy. “Who would have thought Mr. Richmond would fall for a divorced woman? Zoya sure is lucky…”
At that, Kael suddenly stopped, realizing that Zoya’s ex-husband was standing right beside him. He laughed awkwardly and rubbed his nose. “Alright, let’s head upstairs.”
“Sure,” Jasmine replied stiffly, her smile almost cracking.
Clearly, Zoya was the one who had been abandoned by Nicolas. But she looked like the winner. While she and Nicolas looked like the losers.
‘A man like Wren won’t stay interested in Zoya for long, will he? Guys like him never do, Jasmine thought bitterly.
When they reached the meeting room, Kael said, “Please wait outside for a bit. The vice chairman and president are currently discussing cooperation details with Mr. Richmond. You’ll be called in when it’s your turn.”
“What? We have to wait?” Jasmine frowned in disbelief.
“Of course,” Kael replied. His gaze carried a trace of disdain as it swept over Nicolas.
He’d heard the gossip. At the recent island investment meeting, Nicolas had submitted a proposal originally written by his ex-wife before she resigned, including patents that belonged to her.
‘Honestly, how’d a guy like him get his company listed in three years? Probably just dumb luck, Kael scoffed inwardly.
Nicolas’s face turned slightly red in embarrassment. Kael’s tone and the look in his eyes made Nicolas feel downright uncomfortable.
Ever since his business had succeeded, people had treated him with admiration and respect wherever he went. Even when visiting major companies, he’d always been received with courtesy, never left waiting outside a meeting room like this.

This felt just like the early days again. When he’d been penniless, clutching his files, humbly waiting for others to give him a
chance.
The thought made his hands tighten around the folder he was holding
Nicolas had spent days revising those documents. He had to win this project, especially with Jasmine’s help.
He didn’t know how much time had passed before Kael finally said, “Alright, you can go in now.”
Nicolas stood, straightened his jacket, and entered the room with Jasmine.
Inode the conference room, along with the Lucero family’s higher-ups, Zoya and Wren were there too.
Just as the two were about to take their seats, Wren suddenly spoke. “As I recall, unrelated personnel aren’t permitted in this meeting Ms. Ingram doesn’t seem to have any direct involvement in the island project.”
Jasmine stiffened, then forced a smile. “My mother is part of the Lucero family. I count as half a Lucero, too.”
And which part of the island development are you participating in?” Wren asked lightly.
Jasmine froze. Before she could respond, one of the staff members stepped forward and said, “Ms. Ingram, please leave.”
Her face darkened. “What about Zoya, then? She’s not working on the island project either. Shouldn’t she leave as well?”
Daphne added coldly. “Yes, if that’s the rule, then Zoya should go too! She doesn’t hold any position at Lucero Group. It’s not appropriate for her to stay here.”
All eyes turned toward Zoya.
Shaun, Daphne’s father, cleared his throat and said gently, “Zoya, maybe you should step out for now.”
Zoya frowned slightly. She was only here because her role required her to act as Wren’s security escort.
Jasmine’s eyes gleamed with satisfaction. If she couldn’t stay, then Zoya shouldn’t either.
But just as the staff member moved to escort Zoya out, Wren said calmly, “Whether the Richmond family teams up with the Lucero family is solely up to Zoya. If she leaves, there’s nothing left to discuss.”
“What? The room erupted in shock.
This was a major joint project. If Zoya were the one calling the shots, it would be ridiculous.
Even Zoya herself looked surprised. But Wren’s expression was utterly serious, giving no sign he was joking.
Finally, Laurence, the CEO of the Lucero Group, spoke up with authority. “Jasmine, please step outside for now. The meeting will proceed”
Jasmine’s cheeks flushed with embarrassment. With all eyes on her, she had no choice but to swallow her pride and walk out
of the conference room.
“Mr. Mayer, you may begin,” Laurence said.
Nicolas tightened his grip on the file. In all his previous meetings, he had always sat at the head of the table while Zoya had been the one seated below. But now, everything had flipped.
Zoya was the one at the top, in control, and he was the one left hoping for a chance at the bottom.
Swallowing his pride, he began his presentation, outlining the proposal he’d prepared meticulously.
But even though he had reviewed it dozens of times, his delivery now was halting and uneven.

He concluded, “In summary, if we can reach a cooperation agreement, Mayer Technology will work with top experts to upgrade the anti-interference patent system comprehensively. Additionally, we’re willing to offer an extra five percent profit concession on top of the previous proposal.”
At that, several members of the Lucero Group exchanged intrigued glances. In a project of this scale, a 5% concession was a significant sum.
Even though Mayer Technology had performed poorly in the earlier government bidding, the island development was a joint venture led by the Lucero and Richmond families. If Lucero Group wanted to award the drone contract to Mayer Technology, they technically could.
“I think it’s a good deal,” Daphne declared firmly. “Mayer Technology is definitely putting real sincerity on the table.”
“I’m on board too,” Shaun added right after.
One by one, others around the table nodded in support.
Laurence then turned toward Wren. “Mr. Richmond, what do you think?”
Though the project was officially led by the Lucero family, everyone knew the Richmond family’s influence was what made
it possible. Without their backing, the Lucero family wouldn’t have been able to take on such a massive undertaking.
Instead of giving Laurence an answer, Wren turned straight to Zoya and asked, “Zoya, what’s your take?”
“I don’t think we should hand the drone project over to Mayer Technology,” Zoya replied.
Nicolas’s head snapped toward Zoya, his eyes wide with shock.
