Chapter 105
Zoya hesitated, pressing her lips together. She wanted to explain that what she’d said earlier was just out of anger.
Her parents had always loved her deeply, and she had grown up surrounded by warmth and care. Later, when she met all kinds of people, she realized that although some parents didn’t love their children, very few were as filled with hatred toward their own child as Wren’s father was.
Even that forbidden room and the whip scars across Wren’s back only deepened Zoya’s loathing for Logan.
But staring into Wren’s eyes now, Zoya found herself unable to say any of it.
“So, does this mean we’re officially dating now?” Wren asked again.
Zoya was stunned. Yesterday, after Wren had claimed in front of Nicolas that he was her boyfriend, she had told him not to say that again. And now suddenly, they were dating.
“I just…” She felt she had to make things clear.
“I know.” Wren interrupted gently. “I know you only said those things to my dad because you felt sorry for me. But… will you give me a shot? Let’s try dating, alright?”
She fell silent.
“So, are you saying everything you told my dad was all a lie?” Wren asked, his voice low.
“Of course not, I…” Zoya paused, sighed, and her resolve showed in her eyes. “Are you really serious about dating me?”
“Yeah,” Wren answered firmly.
Zoya said, “Then you have to promise me three things. First, if we ever realize we’re not right for each other, I want us to break up peacefully.”
“Okay,” Wren replied.
“Second, if you ever fall for someone else, even while we’re together, I want you to be honest with me. Don’t hide it. I promise I won’t hold you back,” Zoya continued.
She didn’t want to go through the same pain she’d had with Nicolas again.
Wren frowned. For him, there was just no way he’d ever fall for anyone but her. There was only Zoya in his world.
He didn’t even need to think about it. “Okay.”
“And one last thing,” Zoya said, looking straight into his eyes. “During our relationship, don’t lie to me. If there’s ever deceit between us, there won’t be any trust left.”
Wren froze as Zoya spoke each word with icy clarity. “If I ever find out you lied to me, I’ll walk away without a second thought.”
Wren’s heart clenched. If that day ever really came, it’d be pure hell for him.
“Alright, I won’t lie to you,” he said solemnly. “From now on, whatever you ask, I’ll tell you the truth. I’ll never deceive you.”
His serious tone sounded almost like an oath.
Then let’s date, Zoya said.
If she could care for this man enough to punch his father for him, maybe she really did have some special feelings for him.
Especially when Wren asked her if what she said earlier was a lie. She had denied it without even thinking.
In that instant, she knew she didn’t want to see disappointment in his eyes.
At first, she’d thought he was trouble, but after spending time together, she started to admire him, to ache for him. Sometimes, just having him close made her heart flutter in ways she never expected.
Maybe she really did like him. Instead of fighting it, maybe she should just go with it.
When Wren heard Zoya say the words “let’s date,” a brilliant smile broke across his face.
It was a smile Zoya had never seen on him before. It was as bright as sunlight, reaching his eyes and softening every line of his face. It was… beautiful.
Nicolas noticed that ever since they’d returned from the island, Jasmine had been restless and uneasy. She would even get up at night to drink until she was completely drunk.
“Jasmine, what’s wrong? If something’s bothering you, tell me. I’ll help you solve it,” Nicolas said.
“I’m fine. You’re overthinking.” Jasmine forced a smile.
But Nicolas clearly didn’t believe her. “Is it because of the charity event that day? When that old news report about the border fire five years ago suddenly played because of a technical glitch?”
Jasmine’s eyes widened in shock. “You… how did you…”
“You haven’t been yourself since that day. Now that we’re together, you can tell me anything that’s on your mind,” Nicolas said gently.
Jasmine pressed her lips together.
They said the broadcast accident was a system fault, and no one knew how that news segment got inserted. But was it really just a coincidence?
“That news brought it all back… During the fire, someone died right in front of me, burned alive. I tried to save him, but there was nothing I could do…” Jasmine lowered her eyes, her hand shaking uncontrollably as she whispered the words “burned alive.”
Nicolas immediately reached over and held her hand. “Don’t be afraid. I didn’t know you went through something like that.”
“It’s fine. After the fire, I actually went through some counseling. I thought I’d moved on, but I guess it still haunts me,” Jasmine said softly.
Nicolas said, “No wonder you’ve never mentioned it before. If that news hadn’t been played by accident, I’d never have known my girlfriend was once a hero who fought a fire. You’re so amazing… Sometimes I feel I don’t deserve you.”
Jasmine’s eyes flickered with awkwardness. “Don’t say that. We might’ve hit some bumps at the start with the island project, but it’s not settled yet. Tomorrow we’ll swing by the Lucero Group. With your talent and with Daphne helping us out, there’s no way we won’t get that deal.”
The island development project involved the Lucero family as a key partner. As long as they could get the Lucero family’s
support, they could still win the bid.
She continued, “There are plenty of drone experts. It’s not like Zoya is the only one who can handle anti-interference upgrades. Once we have the project, finding other experts won’t be a problem.”
Nicolas’s frown eased. Once they landed the project, he could use it to attract other investors. And once they had the cash, getting things done would be a breeze, including technology, talent, all of it.
The next day, Nicolas and Jasmine showed up at the Lucero Group. As they reached the lobby entrance, several senior executives walked out of the elevator, followed by a few employees, hurrying toward the door.
‘Are they actually here to welcome us?’ Jasmine wondered, taken aback.
She had already spoken to Daphne in advance.
Jasmine flashed a smug grin. “Nicolas, look. The Lucero Group execs are all here to greet you. See? I told connections, I could make sure the Luceros take you seriously.”
you,
with my
Nicolas smiled too and was about to step forward to greet the executives.
But in the next second, the executives walked right past them like they were invisible, heading straight for the entrance.
Jasmine and Nicolas’s smiles froze awkwardly on their faces.
“No way…” Jasmine murmured, disbelief and disappointment swirling inside her as she turned to see a sleek black sedan gliding up to the front of the building.
A staff member quickly hurried over and respectfully swung open the back door, and two all-too-familiar figures stepped out. It was Wren and Zoya.
A sharp sting of humiliation exploded inside Jasmine.
Those execs hadn’t even glanced at her or Nicolas. They were here to welcome Wren and Zoya, not them.
