Nicolas Jasmine shrank back behind Nicolas, clinging to him like he was her only lifeline. “Save me.
Nicolas!”
“Zoya, even if you want to vent, two punches should be enough for Jasmine!” Nicolas gritted out, forcing himself to speak through the pain in his chest.
Zoya’s eyes were full of sarcasm. “Enough? So many lives were lost, and my brother has been missing for five years. No one even knows if he’s alive or dead. Nicolas, do you really think two punches are enough?”
Nicolas was at a loss for words, unable to meet Zoya’s gaze.
“Move!” Zoya said coldly.
Nicolas clenched his jaw. “When Jasmine saved me, I swore I’d protect her. If you lay another finger on her, I swear I won’t let you off!”
But before Nicolas could finish, a brutal kick sent him crashing to the ground.
This time, it was Wren who made the move.
Wren stomped hard on Nicolas’s face, sneering. “You will have to face me first!”
Nicolas groaned in pain, struggling to shove Wren off.
But Wren’s foot felt like it weighed a thousand pounds. No matter how hard Nicolas tried, he couldn’t move it an inch.
“Zoya, if you’re really going to kill Jasmine, I can help you finish her off,” Wren said, glancing over at Zoya.
Jasmine’s face turned ghostly pale at that.
Wren was on a whole other level from Zoya. Zoya might rough Jasmine up a little, but she’d never take it that far. However, Wren was unhinged. It was impossible to know what he might actually do next.
Jasmine tried to bolt as panic kicked in, but Wren’s guys grabbed her before she could move, pinning her down tight. No matter how hard she struggled, she was completely stuck.
Just then, a car rolled up and came to a stop right in front of everybody.
The car doors opened. Harvey and Eowyn got out, dragging along a man with his hands tied tightly behind
his back.
Wren finally took his foot off Nicolas, shooting Harvey a sharp look as his brow furrowed.
Nicolas scrambled to his feet, but Wren’s men pinned him down by the shoulders. Just like Jasmine, he couldn’t move an inch.
Jasmine’s eyes stayed locked on Paul Jerome, her face ghostly pale.
Chapter 169
Why is that detective here with Harvey and Eowyn? He should’ve already been arrested and thrown in jail! Jasmine thought.
Eowyn hurried over to Zoya. “Zoya, what’s going on here?”
I’ve got evidence. Jasmine started that fire at the border, and if she hadn’t, my brother wouldn’t be missing!” Zoya shot back, her voice trembling with fury.
Eowyn didn’t need Zoya to explain any further. She could already read between the lines and figure out why things had blown up like this.
After all, in Zoya’s mind, her brother, Oscar, was quite important to her.
Harvey gave Paul a swift kick right in the ass.
“Not even a hello? You and Jasmine are tight enough to check into a hotel room together, after all!” Harvey taunted.
“Hotel room?” Nicolas stiffened, suspicion flickering in his eyes. “Jasmine, what’s going on between you and
Paul?”
“He’s making it all up!” Jasmine blurted out, panic rising in her voice. “Nicolas, I swear I don’t even know that guy. Zoya must’ve cooked up this whole thing with them just to set me up…”
Paul shouted angrily, “Jasmine, don’t give me that crap. You’re trying to throw me under the bus.
“You said you’d pay me 15 million dollars, and after you wired the last bit, you ran straight to the cops and had me pegged for extortion and fraud. If I hadn’t hauled ass out of there, I’d be in jail right now!”
Still, things weren’t looking up for him. He dodged the police, but Harvey eventually tracked him down and dragged him here.
After Jasmine screwed Paul over, there was no way he was letting her walk away easily.
“15 million dollars? Reporting to the cops? Extortion and fraud?” Nicolas was totally thrown.
He asked, “Jasmine, what the hell is this about? I thought you had no money. Where were you even gonna get that kind of cash?”
“I was…” Jasmine stammered, panic flashing in her eyes.
Before she could explain, Nicolas suddenly froze as something clicked in his mind. “Wait, don’t tell me that 15 million dollars was the loan I took out? You said it was in your uncle’s account and had to stay there for a week for inspection. Could it be…”
Nicolas felt cold sweat beading on his forehead as the realization struck him.
‘If Jasmine really gave all that money to Paul instead of holding it for inspection, did I just lose my one shot to save the business?‘ he thought.
“Paul threatened me, so I transferred the money into his account. But it’s blackmail, so the police will get the
money back soon. We won’t lose anything!” Jasmine blurted anxiously.
She’d had it all figured out. She would transfer the money to Paul, then call the cops right away. That way, they’d catch him before he could run off with the cash. As long as they proved it was blackmail, the money would be returned to her.
But she never expected Harvey to show up and mess up her plan.
“So now you suddenly know him? Weren’t you saying you had no idea who he was?” Harvey sneered, his voice dripping with sarcasm.
Jasmine felt her cheeks burn with embarrassment.
Nicolas looked at Jasmine, his expression a mix of confusion and suspicion. “Paul threatened you? What could he possibly have on you to make you hand over that much money?”
In Nicolas’s memory, Jasmine and Paul were like strangers from different worlds. There was no way their lives ever intersected.
The only reason they’d ever cross paths was when Nicolas asked Paul to dig up the truth about who pulled him out of the river all those years ago.
Nicolas thought, ‘Paul told me that his investigation proved Jasmine was the one who saved me.
‘But if he’d been lying to me this whole time…‘
Nicolas didn’t even want to imagine what that could mean.
Because if that turned out to be true, it would be the end of him.
Paul didn’t care anymore. With no money coming his way and Jasmine screwing him over that badly, all he wanted now was payback.
There was no way he’d let her get away with this.
Paul shouted, “Why else? This bitch isn’t your savior. She’s a total fraud. She didn’t want me telling you the truth, so she tried to buy my silence with 15 million dollars in hush money.”
Jasmine did her best to look calm, but her voice wavered. “Nicolas, Paul must’ve been bribed by Zoya and her friends. Will you trust me?”
Nicolas felt his throat tighten painfully, his eyes skittering past Jasmine as he fixed Zoya with a desperate, searching stare.
‘If Jasmine wasn’t the one who saved me… he thought.
“Zoya, you didn’t save me, did you?” Nicolas’s voice trembled as he forced the words out.
Zoya let out a cold, mocking laugh. “Nicolas, do you even see how ridiculous you are right now? You treated Jasmine so specially because you thought she saved your life.
You owe her, so you worship her, betray your marriage for her, and cover for her even when she’s done horrible things. But what if she never saved you? What would you do then?”
“No, the person who saved me has to be Jasmine!” Nicolas muttered.
“Let’s see for ourselves!” Wren spat, suddenly darting forward and grabbing Jasmine by the throat, slamming her up against the embankment at the river’s edge.
He added, “If we toss her in, we’ll find out whether she’s got what it takes to save anyone!”
