Chapter 19

But just as Anica’s hand was about to touch Zoya’s cheek, Zoya grabbed her wrist.

Anica fumed. “Nicolas, did you see that? I say one thing to set her straight, and this is how she treats me. Why would you stay married to someone like her?!”

Zoya coolly eyed her. “If we divorce, he has to give me half his property. Are you prepared for that?”

“Nonsense! You cheated, so you should leave with nothing!” Anica snapped.

Zoya finally figured it out. That was why Anica had already privately signed the divorce agreement with her, but was now causing such a scene.

So that was Anica’s plan. She didn’t even want to pay the agreed–upon 30 million dollars.

Nicolas’s face darkened as he stepped in front of Zoya. “Let go of my mom. She’s your elder, and even if she scolds you a bit, it’s only right. You shouldn’t treat her like this!”

“Scold a bit?” Zoya sneered. “Is that all she wants to do?”

“Even if she really slapped you, what of it? My mom has done so much for me. As my wife, can’t you just endure it?” Nicolas sounded annoyed.

Zoya’s smirk grew more sarcastic. Yeah, she’d heard it many times before–how tough Nicolas’s mom had it.

And how his father passed away early, and his mom raised him and his sister alone.

That was why she had always been tolerant towards Anica.

“Nicolas, your mom’s sacrifices for you don’t mean she ever did anything for me. Before, I endured because I loved you. But now, I won’t anymore,” Zoya declared.

Nicolas’s face grew even darker.

‘No more tolerance… because of what? Is it because she doesn’t love me anymore? Because she’s found someone better, like Wren?‘ he thought to himself.

“What? Is this how your parents taught you to be a daughter–in–law?“Anica ranted.

Parents?

Zoya’s mind flashed back to her parents‘ faces and the last night they were together before leaving for their peacekeeping mission abroad.

The love her parents showed her was still fresh in her memory.

Ignoring Anica, Zoya directly addressed Nicolas, “My parents raised me with love, not so I’d marry you and endure your mother’s abuse!”

With that, she promptly shrugged off Anica’s hand. “Divorce? Fine! I’ll take what’s mine and we’re done immediately.”

“Zoya, you’ve cheated, and I’m telling you, my family has plenty of money to hire the best lawyers and leave you with nothing!” Violette taunted.

“Cheated? If you’re talking about the person who dropped me off today, that’s Wren Richmond. So, Violette, you’re saying he’s the one?” Zoya retorted.

“What?” Violette was stunned.

Even though she was a bit naive, she knew Wren’s name.

He was someone you just didn’t mess with in Ranard.

“Violette, take Mom out first and tell her not to blab about today’s events,” Nicolas intervened.

Violette nodded reluctantly, her face pale.

If news spread that Wren was Zoya’s affair, not only Zoya but their whole family would be doomed.

Inside the villa, only Zoya and Nicolas remained.

“What exactly is your relationship with Wren?” Nicolas asked.

“No relationship,” Zoya replied.

“Then why did Wren’s driver give you a book in the video?” he questioned, puzzled.

“Borrowed,” Zoya clarified, “It’s a rare edition.. Mr. Richmond knew I loved reading, so he lent it to me.”

Though Wren offered to give it to her, she wasn’t planning on keeping it.

Before Nicolas arrived, she checked the recent auction price of the book on her phone–a whopping 12 million dollars.

It was literally more precious than gold.

Zoya was momentarily taken aback but then suddenly chuckled: “So, you really don’t care about me at all, huh?”

‘Was he referring to me shielding him from the horse at the horse farm? But if I hadn’t, he still had ways to handle it! Besides… Zoya thought.

“Aren’t you already repaying with the doitation for the school?”

“Does Mrs. Mayer think my life is only worth a school?” he countered.

Zoya was speechless.

“But if Mrs. Mayer really won’t accept the book, I can take it back, though I hope Mrs. Mayer can accompany me to the book market,” Wren said.

“Book market?”

“There are quite a few rare books there. Sometimes you can find some really interesting ones. I know Mrs. Mayer loves reading, too, right? How about a trip to the book market together?”

Zoya was silent. Unless she could really stand the thought of that 12 million limited edition book ending up in the trash, it seemed like she had no choice but to agree.

Plus, Wren had accurately hit on her interests. She was indeed interested in the book market.

“Alright,” she agreed.

Two days later, Wren brought Zoya to the book market.

It was just as he said, with quite a few rare books, including some limited editions.

Zoya started enjoying herself and even bought two books that caught her interest.

For a mid–trip break, they went to the rooftop restaurant of a mall.

“I’m going to the restroom,” Zoya said.

However, the restroom on the rooftop was out of order, so Zoya had

downstairs.

While in the restroom, she unexpectedly heard someone in the next stall speaking on the phone in Yamileath, “Yes, everything’s set up. As soon as the time comes, it’ll blow up. That Richmond guy is definitely going to die here today.”
