Eowyn was startled by the thought that had just flashed through her mind.

She thought. Jealousy? A golden boy like Wren, who has everything, would probably never be jealous of anyone. I must have been mistaken just now!’
Zoya and Wren returned to the villa together.
Just as Zoya was about to go back to her room, Wren suddenly asked, “If I had really broken Harvey’s hand today, what would you do?”
She paused slightly, then said, “I won’t give you the chance to do that.”
“I was just saying ‘what if.”
“There won’t be such a ‘what if”,” she said, “I won’t let you hurt Harvey like that.”
His eyelashes trembled slightly, and his gaze fixed steadily on her. “Are you protecting Harvey so much just because he was once your comrade?”
Zoya said matter-of-factly, “Isn’t that enough?”
“You’ve already been discharged!” he said, “Both you and Harvey!”
“Even so, he’s still my comrade!” Zoya said, “If one day we face danger together, he’s someone I can rely on!”
His eyes flickered slightly. “Then what about me?”
“What?” Zoya didn’t react immediately.
“If one day we face danger, can’t I be someone you can rely on?” he said.
Zoya looked at Wren with some surprise, seemingly not expecting him to say such words.
After all, in her eyes, Wren was a dangerous person, and her instinct was telling her to keep away and not get involved with such a man.
Looking at her expression, his gaze dimmed slightly, understanding that she probably hadn’t even considered that.
“What a pity,” he murmured, “I am not your comrade. If I were, would you protect me as you protect Harvey?”
He looked into her eyes, as if a certain ripple stirred within them.
As if expecting something, yet also as if pleading for something.
Zoya pursed her lips. “There’s no point in answering such a hypothetical question. I am currently your bodyguard, so of course I will protect you.”
“What if you weren’t my bodyguard?” he asked.
“Then you would have many other bodyguards protecting you.”
Hearing her words, Wren’s eyelashes trembled slightly. “Indeed,” he said, “Such hypothetical questions are meaningless to begin with.”

He thought, “Time cannot be reversed, and I would not become her comrade!
However, an indescribable sense of loss welled up in his heart.

That evening, after bathing, Wren stood before the mirror, gazing at his face, which was a blend of his parents’ features.
His facial contours resembled his father’s, but his eyes and brows were more like his mother’s.
So every time his mother saw him, she would be reminded of his father, whom she detested.
She would repeatedly push him away, shouting, “Don’t come near me. You are his son. When you grow up, you will definitely be like him, becoming a devil!”
When she called him a devil, her gaze held no affection or pity for him, only hatred and fear.
Wren’s father, on the other hand, would repeatedly whip him, cursing him as useless and scolding him for being unable to win his mother’s favor.
Yet after each beating, his father would look at his eyes, so similar to his mother’s, and quietly sob, “I’m sorry, Wren, I just love your mother too much, so I can’t live without her.
“You must help me keep your mother. You must love me. You are her son. She will surely love you.”
His birth, from the very beginning, was merely that of a prop.
This kind of love was so hideous that it made him want to vomit.
But now, he wondered what his feelings for Zoya were.
“Zoya.” Wren murmured softly, “I think I’m a little jealous of Harvey.”
Today, when he saw her with Harvey, an uncomfortable feeling emerged.
Then this feeling slowly turned into a sharp pain and uneasiness.
It was as if something was slowly gnawing at his heart, and also as if he feared something being snatched away.
When he saw her look at Harvey, her eyes full of that man, and even when she confronted him for Harvey, this sharp pain and uneasiness reached its peak.
Then, he slowly realized that this was what jealousy felt like.
Zoya woke up early the next day.
It was the day to escort her parents’ ashes to the Martyrs’ Cemetery for burial.
Early this morning, dressed in plain black attire, she arrived at the Lucero family Memorial Hall.
Inside the memorial hall, all the Lucero family members, dressed in plain black mourning attire, stood in order of seniority.
The atmosphere was solemn and reverent.
Waldo, leaning on his cane, stood lost in thought before the memorial tablets of Abbott’s family, seemingly pondering or reminiscing.

Waldo came back to his senses and turned to look at Zoya walking towards him. “Zoya, you’re here. Today, we are here to see your parents off.
“It is the Lucero family’s great fortune to have had people like them. Come and pay your deep respects to those who come before you in your family!”
Zoya assented, walked to the memorial tablets, and bowed deeply.
What about others? Shouldn’t we also pay our respects to Abbott?” After speaking, Waldo was the first to bend down and bow deeply to the memorial tablets.
Even though he was elderly and a simple bow had become difficult for him, he still exerted himself to complete all three bows
It was admiration, remembrance, sadness, and deep guilt.
Of his most admired cousins from Abbott’s family, seven went to war, but only one returned.
He once swore to himself that he would protect their family.
But in the end, Abbott’s family passed away one by one. Now, the only one left was Zoya.
From now on, as long as he was alive, he would protect Zoya.
Upon seeing Waldo bow, the Lucero family members immediately followed suit, bowing three times to Abbott’s memorial tablet
Among the Lucero family members, Daphne, despite her unwillingness, had to bow along with everyone else given the current circumstances.
Her resentment towards Zoya, however, only deepened.
She thought, “Zoya is merely relying on Abbott’s status in Waldo’s heart and her parents being martyrs to gain his favor.
‘But Waldo’s health is deteriorating. How long can he continue to support Zoya?
Once the funeral concludes, given her family’s current marginal standing in the Lucero family, Zoya will likely be a nobody
After everyone bowed three times, Zoya picked up her parents’ urns and walked at the very front, heading towards the entrance of the Lucero family Memorial Hall.
The Lucero family members followed behind.
Daphne scoffed inwardly, ‘If the Lucero family hadn’t provided support for Zoya, she would have had to carry the urns alone at today’s funeral.
“Do we really need so many people to attend the funeral?” one of Daphne’s peers whispered.
“Their family has no one left. If we don’t accompany Zoya, wouldn’t it be too desolate?” Daphne said indifferently, her tone seemingly calculated.
“Exactly. If we weren’t accompanying them, Zoya would have to bury her parents all alone. How pathetic!” the other person said, trying to curry favor with Daphne.

After all, many within the Lucero family knew that Daphne and Zoya had formed a grudge earlier at the memorial hall.
In recent years. Daphne’s status in the family had significantly risen due to her relationship with Wren, leading many among her peers to curry favor with her.
Daphne smiled contentedly, “Yes, that’s truly sad.”
But the next moment, as everyone reached the memorial hall’s entrance, the smile on Daphne’s face suddenly froze.
At the entrance of the memorial hall, two neat rows of soldiers in military uniforms stood.
Daphne abruptly froze, staring in disbelief at everything at the entrance.
