Chapter 87
Zoya froze. ‘Is Wren inside?’

From outside the door, she could only hear fragmented, broken groans. She stepped forward and knocked, calling out, “Wren, are you in there? What happened?”
But the only response she got was those same broken groans.
Zoya frowned. If Wren were in a normal state, he would have definitely responded to her knocking and calling.
Unless he was in an abnormal state.
The military had assigned her as his bodyguard because the Richmond family was working with them on a joint project, and there were people who wanted to sabotage that cooperation. Until the deal was finalized, it was her job to keep Wren safe and prevent any interference.
She wondered, ‘Did someone make a move on Wren?’
Zoya stiffened, her entire body shifting into alertness. Quietly, she drew the small pistol she carried with her.
Because she was currently on assignment for the military, she had been granted permission to carry a gun.
The pistol only held six bullets, but that was more than enough to deal with an unexpected situation.
Just as Zoya was about to probe further and try to get a clearer sense of what was going on inside, a pained, guttural growl came from the room.
It sounded like a deeply suppressed roar, emanating from deep within the throat, like a trapped beast.
Zoya’s pupils contracted. Even if this was the room Wren had forbidden her from entering, she couldn’t worry about that now.
She suddenly twisted the doorknob.
She had been prepared to find it locked and to have to force her way in. But to her surprise, it wasn’t locked at all. The door swung open immediately.
But the sight that met her eyes as she stepped inside left her stunned.

Chapter 87
The dim room had whips hanging on the walls. All kinds of whips.

And Wren was curled up in the corner. His usually beautiful, slender fingers were twisted unnaturally, and even his strikingly handsome face was contorted with pain.
Those broken groans kept spilling from his lips.
Zoya’s eyes widened. After confirming that he was the only one in the room, she quickly put her gun away and ran to his side. “What’s wrong with you?”
He seemed not to hear her voice, still groaning in pain, his fingers constantly twisting and clawing at his own body. It was as if he was trying to embed his fingers into his flesh and bone.
“Wren!” Zoya shouted, grabbing his hands with both of hers to stop him from hurting himself. “What’s happening to you?”
“I’ll be good… I’ll be good… I’ll make Mom stay…” he muttered brokenly, his voice fractured.
“Hurts… hurts so much…”
Zoya froze. She thought of the scars she had once seen on his back, of the whips on these walls, and of the things Daphne had said earlier today. Abuse… and Wren’s hatred of his father.
‘Could it be that Wren was once… Suddenly, Zoya felt as if her heart was being squeezed, causing her pain and discomfort.
It was almost as if… she was hurting for Wren.
“Wren, snap out of it!” she said.
But his eyes were completely lifeless, as though he was drowning in this sea of pain. His hands struggled against her grip, trying to break free.
His strength was shockingly great. Seeing that she wouldn’t be able to hold his wrists much longer, Zoya gritted her teeth, used the momentum of her body, and pressed him down beneath her. Her fingers interlocked with his, holding his hands tightly.
“Snap out of it! No one is going to hurt you now. I’m here, and I won’t let you be in pain!” she said, her body above his, forcing him to look at her.
Wren felt as though he were being swallowed by endless pain. The phantom whips lashed across his body again and again, every strike unbearably real.
But even more painful than the whipping were his father’s words, like curses.

Was he unqualified even as a mere tool?

The meaning of his life was only to keep his mother. If he couldn’t keep his mother, would the meaning of his life cease to exist? Why should he even live?
The pain and the darkness felt as though they would drown him completely. He hoped someone could save him.
But he thought no one would come to save him. Not when even his parents had abandoned him.
“Wren! Wren! Can you hear me?” A familiar voice, tinged with urgency, sounded right in his
ear.
He pondered, ‘Whose voice is it…? So familiar.’ It somehow made him feel safe.
“Wren, listen to me. I’m here, and I won’t let anyone hurt you. So… wake up!” The voice was strong and commanding, driving away the darkness before his eyes. Slowly, clarity returned to his
gaze.
A pair of familiar eyes met Wren’s gaze. And that delicate yet spirited face was so captivating. It was… Zoya.
Wren’s eyelashes trembled slightly as he stared blankly at the person before him. She had brought him back from the brink of losing control.
She hadn’t run away, hadn’t shown disgust, hadn’t abandoned him.
“You’re here,” he murmured.
Zoya replied, “Yes, I’m here! Are you clear-headed now? Do you know who I am, where you
are?”
Wren’s dry lips parted. “You’re Zoya, and this is… a room in my villa.”
His gaze swept over the whips on the wall, and he knew exactly where he was. This was the most forbidden room in the villa.
When he was young, his father always “punished” him in this room. To him, this room was his greatest nightmare.
Later, he kept this room as a reminder that weakness only meant being controlled by others.
He had to grow stronger, stronger than his father, so that his father could never hurt him again.

He hadn’t expected that after all these years, the illness he thought he had conquered would relapse, and that Zoya would be the one to enter this room and see him like this.
“How do you feel now? Let me take you to the hospital,” Zoya said.
“No need. I’m fine now,” Wren replied.
Zoya hesitated. “But you…”
“There’s no need. Besides, a regular hospital won’t do anything for me,” he said.
Hearing that, Zoya didn’t press him further. She was about to get up when she realized their hands were still interlocked.
“Relax your hand,” Zoya said.
Wren’s thin lips pressed together as he slowly loosened his left hand. She started to untangle their other hand. But suddenly, his arm wrapped around her waist and yanked hard.
Caught off guard, she fell entirely onto him.
“What are you…” Zoya looked up and met his deep black eyes.
Wren gazed at her, his thin lips parting as he spoke. “Even with you on top of me like this, do you still feel no desire for me?”
