Chapter 86

“So what?” Zoya said coolly.

She was never a particularly curious person. So when Wren first told her about the room she wasn’t allowed to enter, she never once had the urge to find out what was inside.

After all, that was his privacy.

Daphne’s face darkened. She had thrown a powerful punch, expecting to see disappointment, resentment, or pain on Zoya’s face. But Zoya looked completely unbothered. The punch felt like it landed on cotton.

“Zoya, don’t you understand what this means? It signifies that I am the only one special to Wren, the only one who knows his secrets. Moreover, even if I break his taboos, he will always forgive me!” Daphne declared proudly, chin held high.

Zoya had no interest in engaging with her and was about to leave.

But Daphne wasn’t willing to let it go. She blocked Zoya’s path and continued, “You don’t know anything about Wren. You’ve never seen him when he’s vicious and cruel, or when he’s pitiful and broken. Only I have!”

She continued, “When his mother abandoned him and his father abused him, I was the one who accepted him. Only I was there to stay by his side! You probably don’t know how miserable he was back then. If it weren’t for me, he might not have survived!”

The more Daphne spoke, the more pleased with herself she became. Her words grew even more reckless.

Zoya frowned. “Enough, Daphne. Stop talking. I don’t want to hear it!”

After all, this was Wren’s private matter. Moreover, Zoya felt that such a painful matter should not be discussed in that tone.

But Daphne thought she had the upper hand and refused to stop. She kept gloating, “Do you know how his father abused him? Only I know!”

Just as Zoya was about to snap at her to shut up, she froze. She saw a figure appear behind Daphne. It was Wren.

He was walking toward them without saying a word. Clearly, he had heard everything Daphne just said.

Seeing Zoya in a daze, Daphne assumed Zoya was stunned by her words. A malicious smile

formed on her lips. “He never told you how his mother died, did he? But I know. I was there with him when she died. You don’t even know what he was like at that time. He was…

Suddenly, her words were cut off. A hand silently closed around her neck. The long, slender fingers were ice-cold, enough to make one’s blood run cold.

“What was I like? I’d really like to know.” A cold voice, carrying rare hostility, sounded right in Daphne’s ear.

A chill ran up her spine, her face instantly turning pale.

The hand gripping her neck was like steel. She couldn’t breathe at all.

She instinctively tried to pry his hand away, but no matter how hard she tried, she couldn’t move it in the slightest.

The air in her lungs grew thinner and thinner. The fear of death engulfed her.

“What’s wrong? Not talking? Weren’t you saying quite a lot just now?” Wren said coldly.

Since she was facing away from him while being choked, Daphne couldn’t see his expression. But she knew very well that her words had crossed a line she never should have crossed.

She had only wanted to flaunt in front of Zoya that she shared something with him that Zoya could never have, to make Zoya understand the gap between them.

She never thought Wren would hear her.

“Spare… spare me, Wren… I… I didn’t mean it…” Daphne’s face flushed red as she struggled to speak.

“Does it matter whether you meant it?” Wren’s expression was indifferent, but his fingers tightened. “If I’d known you’d be this loose-tongued, I should have ripped your tongue out back then.”

Daphne’s body trembled violently. Because of the choking and lack of oxygen, her face turned from red to white, and even her tongue lolled out.

At this rate, Wren really would strangle her to death. Zoya rushed forward and pressed down on Wren’s hand. “Let go! If you keep this up, you really will kill her!”

“I don’t care,” Wren said flatly.

He was a man who never cared about his own life. Of course, he wouldn’t care about anyone else’s.

Zoya said, “But I don’t want you to go to prison! If you’re truly angry, there are other legal ways to handle this. Why must you choose the most extreme way? Even if it vents your anger, it will destroy your life!”

A ripple appeared in his originally lifeless eyes. He turned to look at her. “You don’t want my life to be ruined?”

“No, I don’t,” Zoya said firmly, her hand still holding his. “So let go. Now.”

Her voice was steady and commanding, impossible not to obey.

Finally, Wren slowly loosened his grip.

Daphne’s legs gave out, and she collapsed to the ground, coughing violently.

“Get out,” Wren said coldly, glancing at her with disdain.

Daphne staggered to her feet, humiliated, but still glared at Zoya. “Don’t think I’ll thank If it weren’t for you, Wren wouldn’t have treated me like this!”

you.

Zoya stepped forward, grabbed her by the shoulder, and dragged her to the villa’s front door.

“What are you doing? Let go of me! Let go…” Daphne struggled.

Then, Zoya swiftly threw Daphne out of the villa.

Daphne fell to the ground in a disgraceful heap.

Zoya looked down at her coldly. “Don’t get it twisted. I did that for Wren’s sake, not yours. It’s not worth letting him go to prison over someone like you.”

Daphne was furious. “You!”

“And one more thing.” Zoya cut her off. “What gives you the right to speak of Wren’s family like that? His past isn’t some trophy for you to flaunt.”

Daphne’s face flushed. “What right do you have to talk to me like that? He and I…”

But before she could finish, Zoya pressed the button to close the villa’s iron gate. slowly slid shut.

The gate

Daphne wanted to curse, but when she saw Wren standing behind Zoya, all the words stuck

in her throat.

That chilling gaze made all the hairs on her body stand on end, as if, should she utter another word at that moment, he would truly take her life.

The gate shut completely.

Zoya turned around and met Wren’s deep, unreadable gaze.

“Aren’t you going to ask me anything?” he suddenly said.

“I’ll pretend I never heard anything Daphne said today,” Zoya replied.

Wren lowered his gaze slightly, looking at his own hand.

Today, when he heard Daphne’s words, he lost control and grabbed her by the throat, just wanting to silence that mouth.

In that moment, it was as if his reason had completely vanished. But Zoya’s words had pulled him back and had made him sober again.

Somehow, her influence on him had grown far beyond what he had ever imagined.

Later that night, Zoya felt uneasy. After Daphne left, Wren had barely spoken a word.

After thinking for a moment, she knocked on the door of the bedroom next to hers, but there was no response.

Her uneasiness grew. She pushed the door open, only to find the room empty, with his phone lying on the nightstand.

Zoya frowned and immediately checked the villa’s security system. There had been no record of anyone entering or leaving. That meant Wren was still somewhere inside the villa.

“Wren! Wren!” she called, searching the villa until she stopped in front of a certain door.

Soft groans came from the room. It was the room Wren forbade her from entering.
