Chapter 96
I wouldn’t joke about something like this,” Wren said, his thin lips parting slightly. In his dark pupils, Zoya’s face was reflected. “Zoya, I don’t know if this feeling truly counts as love for you, but if one day I find I can’t lose that person, then I
call that love.”
Zoya was stunned for a moment. ‘So, did he mean he couldn’t lose me?’ she thought.
“Maybe at first, I just found you interesting, merely because you never abandoned me when danger came, so I wanted to keep you by my side. But when I saw you rush into the sea to save that child, everything changed,” Wren murmured, slowly leaning closer, his face drawing even nearer to Zoya’s.
“I was scared, terrified, worried about losing you like that. I never want to experience that feeling again in my life. And when I realized what was happening, I had already followed you into the sea,” he said.
His voice softly echoed in her ear, his phoenix eyes filled with yearning.. “So, Zoya, give me a chance. Be with me. I will treat you very well; I will give you everything.”
The husky voice was like an enchantment, especially when a proud and privileged man begged in such an almost humble
tone.
Zoya even felt her heart skip a beat for a moment.
“We’ve only just met, and you’re saying you love me and will give me everything. Don’t you think that’s a bit absurd?? Zoya suppressed the momentary flutter in her heart and spoke calmly.
“How long you’ve known someone has nothing to do with whether you love them,” Wren said. “Aren’t there many cases of love at first sight in this world?”
Zoya looked up. “So-called love at first sight is just a euphemism for lust at first sight.”
“But for me, if I fall in love at first sight, it’s definitely not lust; it’s for life,” he said.
“You’re speaking too absolutely,” she said.
“Members of the Richmond family are all like this when it comes to relationships,” he said slowly. Even though he disliked his father, his father’s feelings for his mother were undeniably for life.
As long as his father was alive, he would always love his mother, loving someone who was already dead.
And until his death, he would yearn in vain.
“Zoe,” he called her by her nickname affectionately. “What’s more, my feelings for you weren’t love at first sight, but rather developed over time. Though I think perhaps love at first sight would have been better. That way, I wouldn’t have wasted time and could have understood my feelings for you sooner.”
Zoya pursed her lips. The distance between them was so close that she could easily feel his breath brushing her cheek.
“Feelings develop over time, and it hasn’t been long since we met, has it?” Zoya said. “Mr. Richmond, this is just a momentary impulse for you, perhaps because of today’s sea rescue. After some time, you might not feel this way about me.”
“Then, if I still feel this way about you after some time, would you be willing to be with me?” Wren countered.
Zoya stared fixedly at the person in front of her. “No.”
“Because you don’t love me?” His eyes flickered.
“I don’t have those kinds of feelings for you, Mr. Richmond. I’ve also said that I just got divorced and have many things 1 want to do. I currently have no intention of starting another relationship,” she said.
After saying this, Zoya added, “You should dry your hair yourself.”
Earlier, she was drying his hair, and her hands were still holding both sides of the towel covering his head.
Just before Zoya could withdraw her hand, Wren’s hand pressed down on hers faster.
“I won’t stop you from doing what you want, and I can be your spear and shield,” he murmured. “I will walk alongside you and be with you through life and death. No matter what happens, I will never abandon you or betray you.”
He spoke word by word.
Zoya was stunned. These were words she had said to Wren before.
This was the kind of person she wanted to love.
And Wren had surprisingly remembered it all.
“Or are you saying I’m such a bad person that you’d never fall in love with me, no matter what?” he asked.
“No.” The words slipped out.
His originally dim eyes suddenly lit up. “So, you will fall in love with me?”
Zoya awkwardly cleared her throat. “I just wanted to say that you’re not a bad person.”
If he were truly a bad person, he wouldn’t have bowed three times to her parents’ ashes at the funeral home, nor would he have silently accompanied her when her parents were buried in the Martyrs’ Cemetery.
“And you even went into the sea to save someone today. A bad person wouldn’t go to such lengths to save others.” Zoya said.
“I’d save lives because you save lives. All this time, I never truly valued life, but today…” Wren’s voice suddenly paused. He gently took her hand and pulled it towards him.
“Because of you, I’m willing to save lives and be a good person,” he murmured softly.
She was too bright, too magnanimous, as if no trace of filth or darkness could ever taint her.
But he was too dark. No matter how brilliant he appeared on the surface, he knew he was already rotten to the core.
But darkness yearns for light; to get closer to it, darkness would also want to make itself brighter.
Zoya looked at Wren in surprise.
She had never thought she would hear such words from Wren.
It was as if he was telling her that she could influence his life.
“Zoya, give me a chance,” he gazed at her with longing in his eyes. “If one day, you are truly certain you can never love me, then I won’t pester you. Whether it’s leaving you or becoming strangers from then on, either is fine. But until then, don’t deliberately push me away, will you?”
Zoya remained silent. The yearning in Wren’s eyes somehow reminded her of his curled-up body and the dense scars on his back in the forbidden room at the villa that day.
And the room full of whips, and Daphne once said that he must have witnessed his mother’s death.
Words of refusal seemed stuck in her throat.
A faint pain seemed to rise in her chest.
Zoya wondered, ‘Could I truly be certain I would never fall in love with Wren?’ She couldn’t give a definitive answer.
Moreover, Wren was not someone who easily accepted rejection.
Taking a deep breath, Zoya said, “Alright, I promise not to intentionally push you away. If I truly fall in love with you, we’ll be together. But if I don’t fall in love with you before I complete my bodyguard mission, then we go our separate ways. How about that?”
Wren’s eyelashes fluttered slightly, and a moment later, he smiled slowly, “Alright, it’s a deal.”
If she didn’t fall in love with him, he would find a way to make her love him.
