Chapter 99
“What are you…” Zoya eyed the pillow in his hand suspiciously, hoping it wasn’t what she was thinking.
“I want to sleep in your room tonight,” Wren said.
“Reason?” Zoya asked.
“I get scared when I’m alone in the room. You’re my bodyguard; you’ll protect me, won’t you?” Wren said.
Zoya almost choked on her own saliva.
She had seen him forcefully knock down all those who attacked him, and even when a gun was pointed at his head, he could snatch the opponent’s pistol without batting an eye.
Yet, at this moment, he was still saying it with a serious expression.
“Aren’t there bodyguards guarding your room?” Zoya asked. Some bodyguards from the Richmond family had also come to the island this time to ensure his safety.
“They’re not you. I only trust you,” Wren said.
Zoya didn’t know what to say.
She let out a long sigh and could only say, “Alright then, you sleep on the bed, and I’ll sleep on the sofa.” After all, she was his bodyguard now.
“I’ll just sleep on the sofa,” he said, then proactively placed the pillow on the sofa and lay down on it himself.
Zoya found it hard to say anything more, seeing the situation.
“Then, good night?” She glanced at him.
“Good night.” He smiled faintly.
She couldn’t help but stare for a moment at the faint smile that lifted the corners of his lips.
It seemed recently that she often saw him with a faint smile, which was quite different from his initially cold demeanor.
Zoya closed her eyes and fell asleep, but Wren did not fall asleep quickly. Instead, he sat on the sofa, watching Zoya on the bed from a distance.
She might have thought his fear was about someone attacking or harming him.
But he knew very well that his fear was that something might happen to her, or that she might go back on their agreement today.
He was afraid that her willingness to give him a chance was just empty words.
It turned out that loving someone brought so many fears.
‘And back then, when his father loved his mother, did he feel the same way he does now?’ she thought.
But he would not be as tragic as his father.
His father’s actions back then only made his mother loathe him even more.
He would definitely make Zoya fall in love with him, even if he had to use this body and face.
He hesitated, his fingers involuntarily tracing the mottled old scars on his back.
Initially, he had kept these scars to constantly remind himself.
But now, he worried that she might disdain his scarred body.
“Zoe, don’t disdain me…” he murmured very softly.
His voice almost silently faded into the quiet room.
The next morning, Zoya and Wren, who was pinned beneath her, stared at each other.
“I’m sorry. I wasn’t fully awake just now and didn’t realize it was you,” she said awkwardly.
Just now, while she was half-asleep, he approached the bed and reached out to her, so her body’s instincts reacted first.
Only when she had him pinned to the bed and was fully awake did she realize it was Wren.
“It’s fine,” Wren said. “I only wanted to wake you up, but no matter how many times you want to pin me down, I’m willing.”
“What audacious words, Zoya thought, feeling her ears flush slightly.
If another man had said such a thing, it would only feel like teasing and inappropriate.
But with Wren saying it with such a serious expression, it made one’s imagination run wild.
So, it was not without reason that he was chosen by the magazine as the man most suitable to be swept off his feet.
Zoya cleared her throat, stood up, and changed the subject. “Why don’t you go back to your room and freshen up? I need to get ready too. Isn’t there an investment promotion conference on the island today?”
“Yes,” Wren said. “Are you interested?”
“Me?” She smiled. “I’m not interested.”
Eowyn’s Bluesky Technology currently had no plans to expand into Marabotara. She would return to Ranard City afterward to join Eowyn’s company there, so she wouldn’t be staying in Marabotara, nor would she be joining the Lucero Group.
Therefore, she naturally had no interest in the investment promotion conference for island development.
However, she did know that the Richmond family would be involved in the island development, and Wren had come from Ranard City to Marabotara specifically for this.
“So, if you knew that the proposal Nicolas is preparing to submit to the Marabotara government this time uses the patent you applied for during your marriage, would you still have no interest in attending the investment promotion conference?”
Wren asked.
Zoya froze. “How did you know?”
“Is it that hard to find out such things?” he retorted.
Zoya chuckled. She had indeed asked a foolish question. Since the Richmond family was involved in the island’s development, it was naturally easy for Wren to know such things.
Finally, Zoya accompanied Wren to the investment fair hosted by the government.
When Daphne saw Zoya and Wren enter together, her face showed displeasure. “Wren, why did you bring Zoya to the investment fair? She’s a veteran; what could she possibly understand at a place like this?”
Wren gave a knowing smile. “If you can understand it, she naturally can too.”
Daphne’s expression changed. “Even if you’re interested in her now, you’re giving her too much credit.”
“How I view Zoe is not for you to say,” Wren said.
Daphne could only grit her teeth in hatred.
Soon, Nicolas and Jasmine also arrived at the main conference room of the investment fair.
After Nicolas saw Zoya, his eyes flickered. “Zoya, what are you doing here?”
“If you can come, why can’t I?” Zoya retorted with a laugh.
“I’m here representing Mayer Technology. Who do you represent? Your friend’s company, Bluesky Technology, isn’t on the government’s official list of businesses for the investment fair,” Nicolas said.
“You want to use my patent. Shouldn’t I be here to see it?” Zoya asked.
Nicolas’s expression immediately turned grim. ‘How did Zoya know?’
He glanced at Wren, who stood beside Zoya. Wren was clearly Zoya’s support now, making it likely impossible to kick her
out.
“We already discussed that patent when we divorced. It was applied for after our marriage, so I also have the right to use it.” Nicolas said.
Jasmine chimed in, “Zoya, you readily agreed when you divorced. Why are you reluctant now that Nicolas actually wants to use the patent? I knew a woman like you would be the first to go back on her word.”
She then smiled smugly, “Even if you refuse, it’s useless. Everything should be based on the law.”
At this moment, Jasmine was eager to see Zoya’s frustrated expression.
Even if Zoya was capable of designing a patent, Nicolas would still use it.
All the money earned from this patent would belong to her and Nicolas.
