Gabriel exploded. "Don't you dare mention that wicked woman Elizabeth Bailey to me!"
Jessica swung her arm with all her might and slapped him across the face. The sound echoed in the sudden silence.
Gabriel's head snapped to the side. After a moment, he let out a chilling, broken laugh. "I always knew there was something wrong with how she treated me. No woman could love a child that wasn't hers as if he were her own. Then, two years ago, I found out the truth. The car crash that killed my parents… your mother caused it!"
"That's a lie! You're talking nonsense!" Jessica's hands clenched into fists. Elizabeth Bailey was the kindest, most wonderful person in the world.
Gabriel wiped his face. "I know you won't believe me, but I don't care. Her kindness was just her way of compensating me. So don't ever try to use it to guilt-trip me again. None of you are worthy!"
Jessica was trembling with rage. "You will regret this, Gabriel."
He poked her in the forehead. "I already regret it! I regret doting on you as a child. I regret thinking of Elizabeth Bailey as my own mother. And I regret not killing her myself to avenge my parents!"
Jessica shoved him away. "You're a fool, Gabriel! If my mother really killed your parents, if she was so evil, why would she have kept you? Why not get rid of you too to tie up all the loose ends?"
Gabriel's lips moved, but no words came out.
"Or what," Jessica sneered, "did she keep you around so that one day the truth would come out and you could turn against me?"
