“Okay, Dad. I’ll head up to bed then. You should get some rest, too,” Wayne said.
Arthur nodded. After Wayne had gone upstairs, he summoned Bryan. “Look into this Ms. Phillips.”
Bryan acknowledged the order.
Arthur then turned a displeased eye on him. “Did you call him back here?”
“I just mentioned to Anthony that your blood pressure was high, and he came right back,” Bryan said with a smile. “You see? He still cares deeply for you.”
“Meddler,” Arthur grumbled.
“Yes, I’m a meddler,” Bryan said, his grin widening.
Arthur stood up. “Whether he comes back or not is his business. I can’t be bothered, and I don’t want to be.”
Bryan helped him up the stairs. As they ascended, Arthur asked, “Has he… had his injuries treated?”
“I checked, sir,” Bryan replied promptly. “He’s being treated at Mr. White’s hospital.”
Arthur just grunted in response. After he had retired to his room, Bryan called Anthony George. “Arthur is concerned about you. He wants you to take care of yourself.”
“I know,” George replied.
“You should come back and have dinner with him more often,” Bryan said cheerfully. “He may not say it, but he misses you. If you can make him happy, maybe he’ll come around about you and Ms. Brown.”
There was a long silence on the other end.
“Bryan,” George said finally, his voice deep, “take care of my grandfather.”
“Of course, sir,” Bryan replied.
After returning to the hospital, George first called Jessica to let her know he was back safely.
Jessica looked at him, amused. “That’s right. I’m not the one who’s pregnant, Lillian is. Surprised?”
Lance frowned. “Why did you lie to me?”
“How else was I supposed to get my money?” Jessica shot back. “Lance, you had the money but deliberately delayed paying me. You’re a real piece of work.”
Lance gritted his teeth and grabbed her arm. “You brought Lillian here for an abortion? Do you have any idea how much Willie has wanted a child for the past ten years? How could you do this?”
Jessica shook him off. “What? The womb is Lillian’s, and the child is hers to carry. Just because Willie wants a child, Lillian doesn’t get to make her own choices?”
Lance stared at her, his expression pained. “Jessica, are you doing this for revenge?”
Jessica raised an eyebrow. “Whether I am or not, what business is it of yours, my ex-husband?”
Lance took a deep breath, pulling her toward him. “Are you trying to destroy everyone in the Brown family? Jessica, you’re a Brown, too! Willie is your brother, and that child in Lillian’s womb is your nephew. How can you be so heartless?”
