Lance nodded slowly, leaning back in his chair. While Jessica was confronting him, he remained as relaxed as if he were strolling through a park. “So what if I was? StreamSphere is in trouble, and plenty of people want to acquire it. I simply see a promising future in the streaming industry. If you and Rebecca were competent enough to secure the deal, you wouldn’t be here talking to me, would you?”
Jessica looked him straight in the eye, too exhausted to even feel confrontational anymore. “Fine.”
Catherine walked over, her expression one of innocent curiosity. “Lance, is the streaming company you mentioned today the one Jessica is talking about?”
Lance grunted in affirmation.
“Oh, I see,” Catherine said, her eyes widening in mock realization. “So Jessica wants to buy it too. Lance, why don’t you just let her have it? You were married, after all, and this is the first time she’s tried to build a career for herself.”
Jessica turned to her. “Spare me the crocodile tears.”
Catherine sighed. “No matter what I say, you’ll assume I have ulterior motives. And about Lillian… did you really not know how long Willie has been hoping for a child? Jessica, you’ve become so impulsive, thinking only of yourself. Willie used to carry you on his shoulders when you were little. Is this how you repay him?”
“She doesn’t have a conscience,” Lance added flatly.
Lance’s glare was ice-cold. “Apologize.”
Rebecca burst out laughing. “Apologize to you two? Maybe in my next life! I’ve seen shameless people before, but you two take the cake. You should just get married already and stop poisoning the world for the rest of us.”
With that, she grabbed Jessica’s arm and pulled her out of the room.
